I'm a transfer at Florida State and I'm in the English- Writing, Editing and Media program and we're required to have a minor. I want to work in either paper news or online magazine, that kind of thing but specifically I would love to be a film critic. I figured I could minor in Film Studies but my councilor says the Communications minor is also an option because I already took one of the required Com courses at my CC and Com works well with English majors looking to work in media. I'm not sure which one would be a better choice for my career goals...

Minor in what you’d like to minor in. If you don’t do film, considering your interest in media, other good options other than communications could be advertising, art history, and marketing. Art history is like film studies except with art as opposed to film. You’d be forced to analyze and critique art, which would be similar to that of film studies.

Communications is a great option. I’m hoping to double major in English and Communications myself (I also was considering a film minor.) The thing is, your film interest will be covered, subtly perhaps, by a communications minor. Also, in case you never took the film critic route, a communications minor will be helpful in many other areas of writing media. Good luck!

Are you wanting to work in Florida? If so it’s probably a good idea to be fairly fluent in Spanish. A Spanish minor would be really beneficial to you Of course, it would be a great benefit even if you didn’t work in Florida.

Another option would be something related to computers, web page authoring, electronic journalism, etc.

Thanks, everyone. It would seem that communications is the more practical option for me career wise. I think it would be fun and make me happy to take the film studies route but that doesn’t pay the bills in the long run…

@October47, Although staying in Florida isn’t my priority, I actually tried to get into a spanish language course since I need to take one this semester but I was forced to take a different language as everything else was filled up Thank’s for the advice. I think I’ll give some thought on electronic journalism.

Quite honestly…a minor in communications on top of an English major probably won’t be that much of an advantage for you, as long as you’re able to sell yourself well while job hunting. I would vote for film studies. Film critics are few and far between. This could be the last time you get a chance to really do what you want to do. It could also help you get an edge on entertainment industry jobs…not a huge one, but something.
