English major: Choosing between NYU & Hunter College/CUNY BA

Hi all, looking for some advice on what school to choose. I’m a CC student deciding what school to attend in the fall for my junior year. I’m a liberal arts major, looking towards an English/Comparative Lit degree, and I intend to pursue graduate degrees afterwards (hopefully to become a literature professor). I also want to be an educator for food policy issues.

I currently have the options of NYU CAS, Hunter College (and other CUNYs but Hunter’s my main choice), and I plan on applying to CUNY BA if I decide to stay with CUNY (a program for self-designed/interdisciplinary majors). Also waiting to hear back from Amherst re: waitlist, but that seems a far ways off and I need to get back to NYU early next week.

The main factor for my indecision is the sticker price of NYU - I’m fortunate that my scholarship package will cover over half of my tuition, but even with that aid, I’ll have to bear about 40k in tuition if I attend for two years.

Is the private school education/resources worth the money? Or should I just stick to CUNY?

Honestly, no. And how would you come up with that $40K?

You’re also choosing a path that will likely mean subsistence-level wages.

Thanks for the feedback. Part of it would be covered by my parents, but I don’t want to burden them with debt. I also recognize that I am not pursuing a high-paying career, but I intend to work in a variety of fields with this degree and foresee a long-term return rather than focusing on what I will be making in the next ten years.

I was talking about long-term return.

Because it’s expected to be low, definitely take the cheaper option.
