English or Communications? Please help me decide!

I would like to be a freelance writer or copywriter in the near-future. As for long-term perhaps write my own non-fiction novel or co-run a non-profit.

I was previously an English major and kept being told that I should switch to Comm because of all of my Panhellenic participation, leadership roles, theater activities and speech giving abilities. So I am now considering it and have sit in on a few courses. Though I enjoy them and how they challenge our critical thinking skills, then our ability to execute through group projects, I feel there is not enough writing.

So my question is, should I major in English with an emphasis on Creative Writing to further enhance my analytical and written skills? I will be choosing to pair this with a minor in advertisement to give me hands on experiences with each class providing projects. Also, it will help enhance the media/tech side of things. Or do I major in Communications? And if so, with or without the advertisement minor.

I was a graduate student in English at USC years ago and my child is a Comm major at USC currently. You have to do what feels right for you but… Annenberg at USC is an amazing supportive school. I have been so impressed with all my child has done and she has had several amazing internships. Annenberg will be opening a brand new school Fall 14 which I can only imagine will enhance all the things they already have to offer. There is no other school on the west coast that can touch USC as far as Comm goes.

I have to agree with southerncalimom. Annenberg is amazing and will, best of all, put you in line to get many cool internships and employment after graduation. If you also get an English minor perhaps you can take many creative writing classes when you select upper division courses.
