Im not sure about ENL3 but in UWP as long as you go to class thats all they really care about. UWP is about pop culture and ENL 3 is about literature so if you dont like literature you should go to UWP.

My dd took UWP1 last year. It involved writing a total of 3 papers on an assigned prompt. Each prompt was a little more complex than the last. Attendance was required. She went to office hours with all three essays for advice and ended up with an A in the class.

Attendance is usually required for both. That type of thing always varies per teacher, though; some professors are more lenient than others or just don't care. Usually, though, as UWP1 and ENL3 are almost always taught by graduate students, attendance is required.

I'm an English major so I took English 3 last semester. It focuses on literature (mine specifically fiction, poetry, and drama) and how to analyze/write about it. We had to read several short stories, poems, and one drama, talk about them in class, and write essays about them. I had to write about one paper (3 pages double spaced) per week as well as two journal entries (one page) per week. Most of the people in my class were non-English majors, but I do think UWP1 is probably more suited for non-English majors as it focuses on essay writing and analyzing stuff besides literature.

If you're majoring in something besides English I would suggest UWP1 because it will probably be more helpful and useful to you in your academic career. If you like reading literature and want to major in English then ENL3 is the way to go.

I'm currently taking UWP 1 and agree with what everyone's said so far. It's taught by graduate students. A typical day in class consists of a freewrite, discussion on assigned readings (there's short homework on the assigned readings also), and discussion about something related to the readings. For my class, we have to write a total of four essays plus a final essay. We're on our second one right now, which is definitely tougher than the previous (The first one we wrote about involved analyzing lyrics of a song, while the second one is focusing on how authors use rhetorical devices to prove their arguments in their articles).

I must say that since I'm not one to participate much in class, I find class time extremely tedious. I find myself looking at the time every so often, praying that class will soon be over.

The class is basically just essay writing. If you're not an English major and need to fulfill your university writing requirement, I'd definitely suggest UWP over ENL 3.
