ENGR 110 - helpful?

Hi All,

My son isn’t sure if ENGR 110 will be helpful. He took Project Lead the Way in HS so has a good sense of engineering in general but doesn’t know yet which engineering he wants to specialize in. He’s thinking of biomedical, mechanical, aerospace…so all over the engineering map!

Have any of you taken this course? Did it help you to figure out which direction to go in or was more a general introduction to engineering?

Thanks!

Hi! I took ENGR 110 during fall of last year. It isn’t really a “general introduction to engineering”; its purpose is to show students the various majors in engineering while helping them transition into college.

The class was divided into lecture and discussion. The lectures basically consisted of presentations from students and/or faculty of the various majors in the CoE, and there were a couple of successful CoE alumni who came in to talk about their career. The discussions had maybe 15 students in them, with a couple junior/senior “departmental ambassadors” who led the discussions. In discussion, we usually had casual conversations or did little activities designed to help us navigate college life.

The class didn’t really help me decide my major because I had already done a lot of research into various majors, but I knew a lot of people who figured out their major because of the class. The discussions were really helpful for me, though. It was really good to be able to ask older students for advice about school and info about what to expect as we go through engineering school.

One thing I liked about it: it had a really light workload and almost everyone got an A in it. It definitely didn’t feel like adding a full class to my schedule; it was almost like a club or something. Getting an A in it helped a lot of students who didn’t do as well in their other classes. Overall, I definitely recommend that your son takes it.

Thank you! That’s super helpful!!
