I have heard many different things about Binghamton. Some people consider it a "public-ivy". Some people I've talked to consider it a safety school (at least before this admissions year). Within NY I seem to get mixed reviews, but any school that has good academics and 27k applicants for 2k spots must have an excellent reputation, no?

Binghamton is one of the best “value” schools. It has good (maybe great depending on how much effort the individual puts in, but thats anywhere) academics at a great price (for instate and possbily OOS, but I don’t know about OOS…). It has a lot to offer and it is not a safety school. Trust me, too many great students apply (economy problems or not) for it to be just a safety school.
“Public Ivy” is a possibly adequate description depedning on how the student utilizes all the Bing has to offer.
In essence, Bing is one of the best public universities and a great university period.
I can’t wait to go!
