I'm in the process of applying to Northwestern where I hope to double major in Econ and Theater. I know the theater major is difficult to get into because they cap at 100 students so I was hoping to apply to the WCAS to enter as an Econ major and then double major in theater once I get there. Is this possible? I know there is a cap on students coming in to double major but I'm willing to take that risk after attending the school versus it screwing up my chances of even getting in. Or is it that theater majors must be enrolled in the SoC and you get your double major from WCAS, but don't get your degree from there?

My understanding is that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to complete a Theatre major unless you are specifically admitted to that program.

D knows several people who were admitted as Theatre majors who are completing a double major in Econ.

A couple of thoughts…Yes the Theater program in SoC is tough to get into, however IF you want to study Theater as a major, you must be enrolled in SoC. You will have a higher likelihood of being able to earn that degree if you apply as an incoming freshman, imo, rather than hoping to transfer in SoC. So few theater students drop from the program. You can double major in SoC, with the second major from WCAS, as you already know. (My daughter did this-however it was not her intent when she first applied.) Your degree will come from SoC.
You could also earn your degree in WCAS-and simply involve yourself in the shows during your “free time”. There are ample shows to audition and participate in-including student movies.
I hope this helps.

If you are interested in the theatre major, you should be applying to it through SoC. You can then pick an additional major in WCAS. It doesn’t work the other way.

thanks so much! how rich is the theater culture of northwestern outside of the major, say for minors? i’m mainly interested in playwriting and directing and i was wondering if anyone knew of any opportunities to do such if you were not majoring in theater

There are many student produced and directed shows as there are many established student theatre groups. Every year, students “petition” to produce and direct these shows. You go before the student boards for these groups and “make your case” as to why you should be selected to direct/produce. There are multiple shows each quarter. Check this site out for info on all the groups as well as what they’re putting on each season. You’ll also notice that each show has a different director and producer. http://nustudenttheatre.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

I’ve looked into past years, and it seems that as many as 60 productions are mounted on campus each year, and many of those are student-produced. Based on D’s pre-application research, I feel pretty confident saying that you’d be hard pressed to find a “richer” theatre culture on any campus in the world.

Best of luck with your application!!
