Entering freshman questions

My D is entering WUSTL in August. We are getting supplies ready for her dorm, but have a few questions that we can’t seem to find on the website.

She will be living in Danforth in a double with a shared bathroom with another double. Are these rooms carpeted or should she/could she bring a floor rug?

The Labor day weekend is 3 days after school starts. Does everybody go home and there is little activity on campus, or is there still much to with respect to classes, registration (Studying?). In other words, if my D stays on campus will it be largely a waste with little to do, or will there be much excitement in the air with much to do?

She is undecided about the Greek scene. Any comments for or against?

Any comments on the above would be much appreciated as well as any comments about Danforth in general or social activities.

Thanks

I can't speak about Danforth (my son was in a different dorm that did not have carpeting). I also don't know anything about the Greek scene. I can tell you that my S stayed on campus last year during the Labor Day weekend. According to him, most people stayed around. He went on the school sponsored trip to Six Flags (an amusement park) on the Sunday before Labor Day. The same outing is planned for this year. There is also a home football game on Saturday the 1st at 6:00 p.m.

OK, I just checked with S. He tells me that all modern dorms, including Danforth and evidently the one he was in last year, have carpeting. Guess I didn't notice when I visited!

My son is in Danforth too and another parent on another post said it was a great dorm, had carpeting (as noted), houses the Danforth Scholars (students) and that she was greeted by the Danforth's themselves when her child arrived to move in. My son seems to have the same room arrangement as your daughter. From my own experience with the Greek scene (long ago) and my older son's as well (Cornell) - your daughter will be able to figure that out over the course of her freshman year and likely find the best situation for her needs.

As for questions 2 and 3:
Most students do stay on campus. It's a great time to hang out with your new friends/get anything done that you haven't gotten around to yet. Also, airfare is so expensive, it would be kind of a waste anyway to spend two days in coming and going, for very little time away, so most stay put. In terms of the Greek scene, she has plenty of time to decide about that, as sorority rush isn't until the Spring semester.

Some other random incoming freshman questions:

Has anyone received 'Einstein's Dream' - the Freshman Reading Program book? The Parents Handbook we just received said it would be mailed mid-June along with a list of questions to consider. D hasn't received it yet.

Do the closets in Danforth have one single rod across the top, or is there an upper and a lower rod?

We have been told the bathrooms in the rooms are cleaned by university staff, but what about the rest of the room - are there vacuums in the dorm you can use?

Thank you!

Closets in new dorms are rather small and have one rod, but maybe you can reorganize the closet space. I believe there 2 shelves above the rod.

There may be a communtiy vacuum, but I got S his own mini vacuum sweeper. The cleaning people do not clean dorm rooms, and the dorm rooms can get quite dirty!

S is entering Freshman. Should we be signing up now for classes on the Webstac internet site? Also, he received a letter saying he was on the waiting list for Freshman Focus class on law and society but the registration page on Webstac says he's enrolled. Any idea on who we should believe?

As a freshman in arts and science, you can't enroll for classes until you have met with your advisor. If your son attended an art/sci weekend this summer, he would have met with his advisor and started signing up for classes now. Otherwise, he will do this during freshman orientation at the end of August.

As for the Law and Society class, if webstac says he's enrolled and doesn't indicate a waitlist, then I would bet he got into the class. Webstac is probably more up to date than the letter. Perhaps he was originally on the waitlist but then the space opened up and that is what is now reflected in his webstac status. (my D is waitlisted for a class and the webstac states "waitlist")

Thanks. Another question with regard to e-mail - my son has been given an artsci address e-mail and a wustl.edu e-mail. To sign on there is a user name box and password box. They seem to give the user name (his first and middle initial and part of his last name). He has a password to get on the Webstac site and an artsci e-mail password which he provides after giving the password for the Webstac site. The art sci e-mail password does not work - (or I guess maybe the user name is wrong.) Anyway, can't figure it out - any helpful hints are appreciated.

You may want to try from this site:

http://artsci.wustl.edu/ASCC/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=199&Itemid=133

Then, assuming your email is lalala @ artsci.wustl.edu,
your username is lalala and the password is the password you've been given for email. It should work, although if it doesn't I think there are links on the above site for help. Maybe the email account hasn't been activated yet? Although I guess that wouldn't make sense if they already gave you the password. Hope it works!

Edit...okay, so I just realized that the site I posted is the one that Webstac takes you to if you click on the email link...but hopefully maybe the username helped?

eleph, Thanks for the tips though I think you may be right that the account is not activated yet. Because I've been using the user name as you suggest and then the password that I set for the e-mail based on the password I use to log into Webstac. But it just gives me an error on the log-in so maybe it's not activated.
