I've heard a manila envelope would be best because then they wouldn't have to fold the papers.

We used all 9x12 manila envelopes as one of the colleges requested that size, and as noted above, that size will avoid folding forms and letters. We addressed envelopes to each to the colleges, with our high school's name/address as return (left room for teacher to write their name above high school if they desired).
We put 3 stamps on each one, which per the post office will cover 4-5 pages; probably could get away with 2 stamps but didn't want to chance it.
If you are using the common app, be sure to put your common app ID number (handprinted if needed) at the bottom of the rec. form, as some colleges requested.
Our school counselor complimented my son for doing all this. Good luck!

9x12 envelopes under two ounces (which is more than 5 full sheets of paper) cost $1 to mail (first class domestic). $1 stamps can be purchased at the PO.

We used 4 1/9 x 9 1/2, white envelopes for letters and everything else. One stamp unless the envelope had several pages, in which case we took it to the post office to find out the correct postage.
