Stamps for Teacher Rec Envelopes

I just want to straighten this out

I'm giving my teachers a 9x12 envelope for Stanford (because Stanford asks for a 9x12 specifically) that I expect willl contain three papers total. If I live in Seattle, how many postage stamps do I need to put on there so that it gets there?

Also, for my other six schools (all common app), i'll be giving my teachers a standard size envelope, also probably containing three papers total. How many stamps would this require? (its going all the way across the country)

thanks!

Why don't you just go down to your local post office?

I put three first class stamps (39 cents) I believe on all of my envelopes just to be safe, but there was a thread on this topic earlier, and from what most people say, two will be fine for that size and weight.

i put four 37 cents stamps only because i dont have any 39 cents ones. myschool requires 3 regular stamps.

I'm sounding like an ignoramus but what is standard size envelope ? 9x12 inches or cetimeters ? I'm about to ask my teachers to write for me and give them envelopes too :]
And can letters be folded ? :)

The US Postal Service website has a section on calculating postage. There is an extra charge for 1 oz or less in a large envelope, which a 9"x12" is considered. For more details see:

...I only used one 39 stamp with a large envelope(just 2 sheets of paper inside!), and the college has already got it...I heard on CC that it's better not to fold it because college may photocopy staff.
If I were u...I would use the extra 39 to buy a thing such as certificate of mailing..which I didn't.
