I'm extremely interested in majoring in Environmental Science in college. I've looked at quite a few schools who excel in this area, but most are pretty pricey.

I would really love to go to a school with a program where I could potentially qualify for some merit aid. I probably won't qualify for much financial aid, but a scholarship is important to me. I do want to go to graduate school, and my parents have given me the option of going to a cheaper school for a bachelors and using the rest of my college fund to go to graduate school - so, if I blow my college fund on my bachelors, I won't really have anything left over for any schooling after that.

I have a 32 ACT, a 4.33 weighted GPA (I believe it's around 3.7 unweighted), lots of extracurricular activities (including some top leadership roles), an international award for a business competition, etc. I live in Colorado, if that helps.

Are there any great ES programs at schools were are a little less pricey and offer some good scholarships? I know I qualify for the Presidential Scholarship at the University of Alabama, but I'm not sure how good their program is.

I'd appreciate any advice/opinions you have! Thanks in advance.

One of my friends is majoring in environmental science and she goes to Roger Williams University. It isn’t that prestigious and the average ACT score is a 24 I think. They offer merit scholarships as well. I do not know much about the program, but I know that my friend gets awesome opportunities. For instance, she has travelled to many places, such as the Caribbean, to help researchers and was a part of some research on plastic cleanup in the oceans this past semester.

Cal Poly SLO has a solid school of agriculture/natural resources. I don’t know that they have the exact environmental science major but I know they have environmental earth science and environmental soil science if you’re interested. I got some merit aid designated for OOS students from them when I applied and my stats weren’t as good. University of Wyoming also does this (they give more than Cal Poly) but I’m unsure how good their environmental science program is.

Also check out schools that participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange where you can go to certain public schools in other western states and pay cheaper OOS tuition. Big names off the top of my head include Wyoming, U of Arizona, Arizona State, U of Utah and U of Hawaii
