Alright i'm really confused by the ERC language requirement. So apparently we have to take a language for 4 quarters, correct?
- Do you take the proficiency test first or placement? What's the difference?
- Also..say I do bad on the Spanish test and I would have to start from the beginning. Can I just take a different language instead like Russian since both would start from the first course?

1) you have to take 4 quarters’ WORTH of a language (this isn’t the same as having to take 4 quarters of classes). so if you place out of 3 quarters’ worth, then you only need to take one class at ucsd.

2) https://lang.ucsd.edu/llp/placement/index.html those who test into higher levels will get assigned a one-on-one speaking test to make sure you didn’t just bribe a native speaker to cheat for you

3) yes, any 4 quarters of the same language will count.

the majority of people just finish off whatever they started in high school. an AP score of 3 will count for 3 quarters of that language. an AP score of 4/5 will satisfy the entire language requirement.

1) So how long is 4 quarters worth of a language in the UCSD system?

2) So I take the placement test? What’s the proficiency test then?

3) I never took AP Spanish I just took it from 8-10th grade and really disliked it haha.

It’s 4 quarters long on my planet, dunno about yours.

The placement test places you in an appropriate class. If you think you’re good enough at a language to attempt to pass out entirely, you head for the proficiency test. Since you didn’t achieve proficiency in high school, you’ll be taking the placement test.

") you have to take 4 quarters’ WORTH of a language (this isn’t the same as having to take 4 quarters of classes" What are you saying here? Haha.

And ok so if I take the Spanish placement and get into the first (lowest level Spanish) can I just take the Russian placement instead since I’d rather do that unless I score well on Spanish?

-Also, do you know if I math placement tests are re-takeable

You can take the Spanish placement test and see what you get placed into. It’s not binding. If you want to study Russian, you don’t need to take the placement test since you [presumably] have no previous exposure to the language.

Alright thanks for all the help. I probably want to take Russian but I would still like to see what I get on the placement test for Spanish. Which one do I check on the new student portal?

"I want to start a new language from those offered at UCSD. " (Russian)
“I plan to take the placement exam in French, German, Italian or Spanish, so I can continue to study this language.” (Spanish)

Or check both?

Also I just took the Spanish placement test after not taking the class for 2 years and got placed into 1B…what does that mean ha

That you know enough of the language so you won’t benefit from taking 1A, but you don’t know enough yet to take 1C.

it’s good to have you back, Astrina.

thanks! :)
