I was super lost on which classes to take & I was counting on E-Advising for some guidance, but that definitely didn't happen, haha.

I'm a Freshman at ERC, majoring in Psychology, possibly minoring in Spanish (?).

So far, I have ETHN20, MMW1, PHIL12 & LISP1D.

I have yet to take the math placement exam, so it's pretty safe to say that I won't be taking a math my first quarter there. :( The thing is, I don't need to take a language because I tested out of it through SAT2s. But I decided that I wanted to continue to learn Spanish & took the placement test to get placed into the 4th quarter of Spanish.. and apparently students only need 4 quarters of any language to fulfill the requirement. As in, after I take a quarter of Spanish, I'd be done? Would I be better off taking a new language? If so, I'd be choosing in between ASL and Japanese.. Go figure, haha.

Which fine arts should I take? ERC requires me to take 2 quarters of fine art & I can't say I find the classes too appealing.. :)

Is it smart to get started on Regional Specialization my first quarter? Or should I get started on other classes (i.e. math, lang & etc)?

Yes, after you take LISP1D, you’ll be done with your language requirements. If you wanted to take a new language instead, that would be another 4 quarters since I’m assuming you have no background in either ASL or Japanese. It’s up to you if it’s worth it. What’s wrong with Spanish, anyway? It will probably come in useful in this country and you said you might want to minor in it.

For fine arts, do the very basic music/art classes and take them pass/no pass. For example, MUS 15: The Beatles is a popular one.

You will need 2 upper division regional spec and 1 lower division. It’s fine if you do the lower division one first quarter, but I would really not recommend jumping into a UD course your first quarter.

I always loved the language (Spanish) & found the culture interesting, but I just don’t know if I want to stick with it or start fresh. College seems like a good place to change things up a bit. I suck at making decisions, that’s all. Hahaha.

I want to take ETHN20 as my LD the first quarter. It didn’t seem extremely difficult or anything… It’s doable, right?

If my time slot happens to be smack in the middle (sign-ups start on the 25th-30th & my time slot is at 9:40AM on the 27th), what are the chances me getting the classes/times I want? How many back up classes should I have on hand?

ETHN 20 is definitely a good class to take first quarter. Doesn’t seem too difficult. And Ma Vang is teaching it, she’s legit from what I’ve heard.

Your chances are good that you’ll get the classes you listed above. Although, you may have to waitlist. Have a few backup plans just in case, but that is almost exactly when my time was last year and I ended up getting good classes and times.
