I do not know how to fix a problem with my sons MPN. His middle initial is incorrect on it, although I'm sure I checked, checked and rechecked before we submitted it.

His FAFSA PIN information is all correct.
His student loan Entrance Counseling is correct.
His MPN middle initial is wrong.

The loan website is no help - it directs you back to correct personal information on FAFSA (which is already correct) There are no numbers to call and the "contact us" is only to leave feedback on the website. Grrrrrrrrr!

Someone at his schools financial aid department said we should probably just apply again, but I don't know if it would let us or if it would repeat the same wrong information. It would be a nightmare if the school somehow then accepted loans under BOTH middle initials.

Maybe I'm obsessing over nothing here and it won't matter, but I know from experience these loans can be a nightmare even when they are done correctly.

Any suggestions?

I don’t think it’s an issue. According to the Direct Loan Guide for Schools, the following is used to link Direct Loan MPNs to the borrower: For Direct and Unsubsidized loans, the COD system will link a valid MPN using the student’s Current SSN, Date of Birth, and first two characters of the first name.

In other words, the MPN will link to the loan. You can always do another MPN - it doesn’t hurt anything. The loan will probably be linked to the first MPN, though. If the MPN was accepted (you would be contacted by Direct Loans if it was not), it will link — I don’t know that an incorrect middle initial would cause it to reject, as long as everything else (particularly first, last, and SSN, is correct).

Having two MPNs won’t hurt anything. It’s the loan origination record that drives the loan process … two of those is an issue, but then, the second would be rejected by the processor if the total of the two loans is more than the annual amount allowed for year in school, anyway! Only the school can originate and disburse sub and unsub loans, so rest easy - they aren’t going to create two loan records just because the student did two MPNs. The only thing the school does with the MPN is make sure an accepted MPN is on file before disbursing the loan.

We will just wait it out then and he can reapply if there’s a problem. Thank you!
