Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it (BB essay practice test 8)

Heroes are some of the most revered people in society. It takes great audacity for someone to become a hero. As exemplified by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, heroes are the courageous citizens of society who express and represent the ideals of timid, everyday people.
Abraham Lincoln was an extraordinary orator, as he moved crowds with his majestic rhetoric. However, his speeches also had substance. He got his ideas from the ordinary United States residents who were afraid to express their beliefs. Abraham Lincoln was not the only abolitionist; however, he was the epitome of all abolitionists because he never backed down from any opposition. When Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas challenged Lincoln to a series of debates in the 1858 Illinois Senate race, Douglas was convinced that he would put a dagger in Lincoln's resolve by outwitting him in the debates. Instead, Lincoln made Douglas look like a fool as Lincoln stood firmly to his doctrine of abolitionism. Every abolitionist and many neutral listeners were swayed by Lincoln's audacity in mocking slavery. Thus, it was no surprise that this doctrine Lincoln so dearly believed in allowed him to beat Douglas two years later in the 1860 United States presidential election. From these valiant beliefs, Lincoln became a hero among many United States residents.
Furthermore, Martin Luther King stood up to centruies of sterotypes and openly defied those beliefs. He voiced his creed of equal rights for all citizens in his renowned "I Have a Dream" speech. In that speech, he represented the thoughts and prayers of all African Americans that had suffered through tyranny and opposition throughout the centuries. Although many African Americans believed in King's creed, only King can be classified as a true hero because he openly stated this doctrine to all Americans. His speeches and other actions captivated the minds of millions and led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act. Martin Luther King never backed down from a formidable opponenet, as he always voiced his beliefs.
Although both Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King were assassinated for voicing their opinions when others lacked the boldness to do so, their heroic qualities were never blemished. Their legacies as heroes lives on because they represented and stated the beliefs of people who were afraid to let their voices be heard.
