<p>Topic:
Traditionally the term "heroism" has been applied to those who have braved physical danger to defend a cause or protect others. But one of the most feared dangers people face is that of disapproval by their family, peers, or community. Sometimes acting courageously requires someone to speak out at the risk of such rejection. We should consider those who do so true heroes. </p>

<p>Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it?</p>

<pre><code> "Hero" is a term that is generally used to define brazen acts of courage and bravery. Whether it be saving a child from a burning building, or speaking out against and injustice, the term "hero" can be applied to the person involved. They are able to conjure up enough strength to act when others do not. Martin Luther King, Jr. is such a person.

Martin Luther King, Jr. did not rescue a person from certain death in the traditional sense, but rather rescued our country from the social pitfall of segregation. At a time when black civil rights had no leader, King rose up and accepted the position. Through his passionate speeches, and massive marches and protests, King opened the eyes of the American public to the injustice toward blacks in the South. King risked many things by being so outspoken against social conventions. He is applied the term "hero" because he stood up for what he believed in and stared down danger in the face.

Recently, W. Mark Felt revealed himself as "Deep Throat". Deep Throat was the name given to the anonymous source who leaked information crucial to uncovering all aspects of the Watergate scandal. Woodward and Bernstein, Washington Post journalists, revealed the extent of corruption that was prevalent in the Nixon administration. Felt, despite the secrecy being kept by his colleagues and superiors, believed it to be in the best interest of the country to know the truth. He helped America come out of an age of illusionment toward government.

Upton Sinclair published the expose, "Jungle," and revealed to the country all of the problems with the meat industry in the early 1900's. His research led to better food quality and sanctions on contamination prevention in America.

Heroes come in two different forms: the physical one, and the mental one. Martin Luther King, Jr., W. Mark Felt, and Upton Sinclair all displayed heroism because they spoke out against the "norm" when no one else contained the courage to do so. Heroes risk their reputation and sometimes their lives to stand up for what they believe in. The aforementioned three were heroes because, although they did not literally save people from a burning building, they opened the eyes of the public to injustices that needed reform.

<p>I would give it a 5 probobly (but i'm by no means an expert). The paragraph about upton sinclair is to brief and random. You should have replaced that with more reasons why your other two example aptly support your idea. I would also advise putting into your essay a kind of "thesis statment" that sums up the enitire essay in a clearly defined and powerful sentence. Best of luck!</p>

<p>I'd say a six because you definitely demonstrated clear and concise thought in your first 2 examples. Your grammar is also very strong. I have to agree with stix2400 on creating a thesis. These graders don't spend much time on each essay and a they definitely look for a thesis statement.</p>

<p>yeah tahts what i thought too...it needed a clear thesis and i added the upton sinclair paragraph to have another example but i ran out of room and was no able to make it as long as i could have because i needed to make the conclusion...</p>

<p>anyone else? </p>

<p>oh and thanks to madskier87 and stix2400 for their input</p>

<p>asking a new audience for opinions?</p>

<p>can someone plz rate my essay on a scale of 1-12…
"Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it? "</p>

<p>Often people consider heroes as people who protect people, but actually heroes are people who say things they think when other people lack the courage to say it. The life of Mahatma Gandhi, the fight against racism by Martin Luther King Jr. and the political leadership of Abraham Lincoln elucidate this fact.
Mahatma Gandhi’s whole life was characterized by non-violent means of freedom struggle. Born in a small village in India, he later came to be know as ‘Father of Modern India’. The intrepid old man used non-violent resilience to drive away the British from his country. He stood for the people when the latter lacked the courage to stand for themselves. He believed that his country should get freedom and so did other Indians, but he had the courage to lead from the front. To India, he gave a nation, but to the world he gave the doctrine of ‘Non Violence’ which is arguably the most important principle of the twenty first century. His life explicitly edifies how a person stood for what he thought was right when other people lacked the courage to do so.
Similar to Gandhi’s life, Martin Luther King Jr’s fight against racism edifies how a person became a ‘Hero’ by saying things others lacked the courage to say. Martin Luther dedicated his whole life to fight for ‘Equal rights for all’. He played a crucial role to pass the amendment in the a American Constitution which gave African Americans the right to vote. He was articulate orator and in his speeches he said things about ‘equality and brotherhood’ which other people also believed in but lacked the courage to say. Martin Luther King Jr has become an American hero, and a tribute to him is given to him by a national holiday on every third Monday of January.
In addition to these two heroes, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of America’s political struggle to protect the Union of States shows how a person becomes a hero by standing for things others cant. Abraham Lincoln fought to protect the Union of States in America, he fought for what he believed was right and what other people lacked the valor to do.
The lives of these three courageous men, explicitly edifies who a true Hero is; one who says things what he thinks when others lack the courage to say it.</p>
