Through-out history people who have been defined as heroes for speaking when others lacked the courage include Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln. These individuals have made an impact on the society we know today. Whether it was adressing racial segregation or the abolishment of slavery, they both spoke-up when others lacked the courage to. Yes, heroes should be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage.

On December 1, 1955 through 1956, Martin Luther King led the Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott. This was a political and social protest campaign intended to oppose the citys policy of racial segregation on its public transit system. Before, this protest under the system of segregation, white people who boarded the bus took seats in the front rows, filling the bus toward the back; Black people who boarded the bus took seats in the back rows, filling the bus toward the front. Eventually, the two sections would meet, and the bus would be full. If another white person boarded a full bus, then everyone in the black row nearest the front had to get up and stand so the new row for the white people could be created. It was not until one black woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person. Rosa Parks arrest was the trigger for Martin Luther King to begin his protest. During, the Montgomery Bus Boycott those who opposed racial segregation would use other methods for transportation which included: private motor vehicles, cycling, walking, or riding mules or even driving horse-drawn buggies. As a result of the protest, the loss of the citys transit system caused a serious economic disaster. This protest lasted for two years, on December 20, 1956 the Supreme Court declared the Alabama, Montgomery laws requiring segregated buses unconditional. MLK efforts led him to 1963 March on Washington for jobs and freedom, where MLK delivered his I had a dream speech, which raised public awareness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history. MLK, couarge enabled him to speak-up for what he believed in. Without, his courageousness segergation may still exist today.

On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared the emancipation proclamation. The emancipation proclamation freed slaves in confederate held territory. Before the emancipation proclamation slaves were held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase, or birth, and were deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to receive wages in return for their labour. Treatment of slaves was both harsh and inhumane. Slaves were subjected to physical and mental abuse which included: whipping, beating and sexual exploitation. When the emancipation proclamation was innacted, slaves were released immediately. The result of the proclamation represented a shift in the war objectives of the North reuniting the nation was no longer the only goal. It represented a major step toward the ultimate abolition of slavery in the United States. Following up the Emancipation Proclamation and after Abraham lincoln assassination in December 6,1965 the 13th amendment was finally passed. This abolished slavery completely. Abraham Lincoln couarge allowed him to go aganist the confederacy, and abolish slavery. Without Abraham Lincoln courage to speak up for what he believed, slavery may still exist today

Heroes should be defined as people who say what they think when we oursleves lack courage. Both Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln are great examples of people who have spoken their minds and stood-up for what they believed in when others could not.
