Question: Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better?
Technology promises to make our lives easier, freeing up time for leisure pursuits. But the rapid pace of technological innovation and the split-second processing capabilities of computers that can work virtually non-stop have made all of us rushed. We have adopted the relentless pace of the very machines that were supposed to simplify our lives with the results that, whether at work or play, people don't feel like their lives have changed for the better. However, our technology might potentially benefit us rather than hurt us, in some certain cases.
Take the computer for example. Back then, nobody hardly knew what this mysterious device was. It was just an abstract idea that a few fellow scientists and engineers were pursuing in creating. This would lead to the creation of the first computers worldwide. That being said, the computers back then were big and bulky pieces of machinery, with hardly a good memory drive inside. Eventually, people became frustrated and amazed at the sight of these humongous, cumbersome electronics. Also, with the invention of the Internet, computers were starting to lose of that charm and mysticism it had.
As scientists ad most other people were getting acquainted with these computers, engineers were trying to find a way to make them better, by making them run faster and be much more small and portable, and cooler pieces of machinery that could do most of the big work we humans have to figure out. All that knowledge was programmed into the computers, and has allowed us to be able to figure out stuff that we would have never pondered.
That being said, computers are better, and are continuing to evolve, but that technological "upgrade" also comes with risks and dangerous mishaps. For example, computers tend to contain these little viruses and such that could potentially hinder the software of the computer and also destroy it, rendering it useless. There is also the fact that our future might actually not end up into the "utopia" that we always dreamed of. With so many sci-fi movies about technology taking over and such, like the Terminator movies, it's not a promise that our future isn't set and in a sense, our society might become cruel and corrupt because of technology.
Our technology doesn't have to become the death of us all. Look at all that we have accomplished with the advancements and what we have gained over the years. It's a slight possibility that our future might not turn out bleak, however it depends on what we do in the long run.
