I am considering applying to Vanderbilt to study business and have an essay idea. I would appreciate feedback on whether or not this would be a good idea.

I am an entrepreneur and I run a rather successful clothing business. I plan on writing about my experiences and successes as an entrepreneur and how I will utilize Vanderbilt's educational resources to broaden my knowledge of business to in turn lead my business to be even more successful.

Thanks

Wow you must have really strained a few brain cells coming up with that “idea”.

But more seriously, that sounds like you have an impressive accomplishment at your age. I’d take a contrary view. I’d write the essay about another side of you, a more intellectual or academic side. Your accomplishment will stand on its own and doesn’t need much embellishment. You might use some examples that you mention in whatever short or supplemental answers Vandy asks. You want at least one essay to show that you are not just one dimensional.

That’s amazing, quite the achievement, but instead of just how great it is (because we know it’s an impressive achievement) or how an education from Vanderbilt will help (because they know it will), you should focus on how you’ve developed and the skills you’ve gained from this endeavor. I imagine you’ve learned a lot in terms of responsibility, entrepreneurism, and determination.
