Essay: Is identity created? Or is it innate?

For some reason, did this one in 15 mins but couldn't add anything later on.

Our identity is the collection of all things that define us, that differentiate us from the billions of people on this planet. It comprises of our personality, our tastes, our ideals and even our appearance.

To claim that identity is innate is absurd. Certainly some aspects such as appearance may be innate but others such as our ideals are a result of our decisions and circumstances. When we are born we are like lump of clay, ready to be molded into any shape, ready to take on any form. As we mature and become self aware, the clay gradually takes shape and gives us our identity.

It is true that our genes may influence us, both directly and indirectly. Some people may be inclined to jump to anger due to hormone imbalances. Some people may be diffident and reserved because they have some congenital condition.

However, genes are not the dominant factor when it comes to shaping our identity. The fact that people change their views and ideals, effectively changing who they are, is testimony to this. For example in the film American History X a neo nazi skinhead with a swastika emblazoned on his chest murders some black men who attempted to steal his car. Then, in prison, he undergoes drastic changes in his outlook and views. He is befriended by a black man while he is brutally raped by the members of a white supremacy gang. His black friend protects him from the wrath of the black community who are itching to get their hands on him for murdering two blacks. After coming out, he is a different man, changed on a fundamental level due to his new experiences.

Ultimately we are the sculptors with our lump of clay. We can create anything under the sun with our clay and change things at any time as well. We are who we choose to be.

So how much do you think this would get? Also, do you really need to have some sort of format before you go for the test?

OP, I’d give you a 2/6.
Rudimentary vocabulary and limited examples.

this would probably get an 8 because in my opinion your vocabulary is good and your essay flows, but if you stick to a structure this could easily be an 11-12 with more examples.

There’s just one example. The presented argument is not very concrete either.

I agree with thenaga. I think your argument is compelling, but it just needs to be supported more. I think your vocabulary is certainly not amazing, but it’s also not rudimentary. Overall, you should’ve spent that extra ten minutes giving more concrete evidence to support your viewpoint.
