Essay topic: Too cliche?

I sent in an essay for my EA schools that described my community and how it shaped me. I live in the Dominican Republic, but go to an American school that is very international, so I sometimes have trouble identifying myself as a Dominican. It was well-written and interesting, from what I heard from other people, but I'm scared that the topic is a little cliche. I'd be a borderline applicant for many of my top choice schools, so I need the essay to stand out.

I have a couple other ideas that could be slightly less cliche, relating my interest in writing with my tendency to over think things. Should I start the essay from scratch?

I can send the essay to anyone that asks, as well as give some more details on my idea.

What makes you significantly different from every other person walking the face of this planet that is applying to whatever schools you’re applying to? What is something about you that you feel needs to be know and that’ll show a lot of different sides of you that the application, otherwise, will not? What will set you apart and land you in the right pile of applications when time arrives?

Think about all of these things and the topic should come to you.
