essay word limits! those of you who were accepted!!!

My daughter was accepted to Yale last week.
Her Common App essay was 548 words, and the Yale Supplement, 496.

I just reread them, and can honestly say that each is little gem: compact, faceted, with simple, overarching themes, engaging personal voice and revealing details. She worked very hard to craft them under the word limits (she chose 550 limit for the common app essay). Each started out at over 1000 words, and as Fringey said in an earlier post on this topic, each word was made to fight for its life.

Am I the only one who had to struggle to get my essays UP to a reasonable length???

My common app was 456 words and my Yale supplemental was 418. I guess they were good enough, though.

im worried now... im applying RD and i see a general trend of going OVER the limit... all my essays are 500 wrds, so im scared that mine arent long enough... :( ... ohh well, well see...

my common app was 512, my yale was 547.

they were nice and compact.

there is really no reason to go over 650, because if you do you are not being frugal enough with your wording

ditsy, i wasn't being sarcastic...i've heard sb say this actually in the admissions business...

My common app was about 3100 words and my supplement was 500 exactly. They let me in. Maybe they respect the audacity to buck authority?

i find that unbelievably hard to occur..

3100 words?!!?! what the bleep did you have to say? lol

Word counts for son: 620, 600. Seeing a general trend here for Less is More- put yourself in the adcom's shoes.
