I've done a couple google searches and found that there are quite a few essay contests out there for high schoolers, and many of them offer a decent amount of money for college too.

But I was just wondering if these contests carried any weight on a college app, and if so, which ones are better known?

Thanks

Sorry if this is the wrong section, this seemed to be the best fit.

depends. is it a "name" contest-personally, Ayn Rand or "JFK Profiles in Courage" will jump at me for than other things...but I don't think it hurts to enter/win local contests.

Personally, I won a local contest, got some sweet cash ($60) for about 4 hours of work, and a line on my awards section :)

They may carry some weight and there's no real "order" of importance; just enter some that you like and write...use google and stuff you're interested in. Don't stress it. You shouldn't have to ask what is "more important".

All right thanks for the advice so far. I just was wondering because I wanted to try to win some that are known as legitimate and also carry enough weight to put on a college app and actually be counted for something.
