Essay

How are you guys tackling this prompt?

Tell us about a book you have read that you found especially challenging, stimulating, or provocative. Explain why it made an impact on you.

I have a paragraph describing my list of favorite books, then a paragraph about my favorite book from the list/its impact on me meshed together. Think that would be sufficient?

I feel like that doesn’t answer the prompt?

One book only.

No, I don’t think it will work at all. If you want to talk about other books really briefly in an intro, then that’s fine, but you don’t want to describe any book except the one you’re writing about.

Also, don’t pick your favorite book, pick any book that you found challenging, stimulating, etc…admissions officer would much prefer you chose a book that was difficult for you to read, but impacted you in some way. In other words, don’t pick Harry Potter or Eragon, even though they’re awesome books.

I recently read a short book called The Heart of Darkness. I hated the story while reading it, and it was really difficult, but when I finally got to the end, it was meaningful, and overall the story was everything the prompt asked for. If I could redo my essay, I’d definitely write it on this book, but unfortunately, I already submitted my sucky setback essay :(

EDIT: Dang, now I’m really really mad I didn’t read this book earlier. I could have written a really good essay on it…

“Tell us about A book…”

A book

But did you guys write more about the book or the impact it had on you? Like how much of your essay did you use to describe the book and how much did you use to describe its impact on you?

I didn’t do this topic but I would have definitely written more about the impact than about the book itself. Just write enough about the book itself so the reasoning behind your impact is clear to the reader. The reader wants to learn more about YOU not a book.

^ I agree. This is an essay about how how and why a book made an impact on you, not a middle school book review.
