Essays for SHC and SAT chances

Essays: There is no word limit...about how long should they be?
Also, are they like ESSAY essays, like an essay you'd write as your main one, or are they more long responses?
How formal should they be?

SATs: I have great recommendations, the hardest course load possible, great class rank, pretty okay ECs...BUT! I have a 720 on the reading section of the SATs and a 620 (ouch) on the math section. This is a 1340, which is 10 points below the minimum. I know it said that some people can still get into the SHC, but do you have to be absolutely amazing for that? Because I know I have a good profile, but it's not SO astounding that I think I have a perfect chance.

Thanks!

From what I remember, the recommended essay length was around 1.5-2 pages, double-spaced. The application stated that it would be OK to go over the limit "If you really have something important to say" or something like that. Last year the application was on paper and it did state the length limit...I'm trying hard to remember it exactly. Perhaps it was posted on here from last year or prior. I'll try to find the answer.

Good luck with your apps... I remember this time last year... it's rough; you'll pull through though. Late December is a good time to relax as most-all apps are done and it's the holiday season.
