How much do essays affect whether or not applicants are accepted? I'm an average student (grades and test score wise) and attend an academically rigorous school, but I wrote a killer essay. I also have a lot of EC. Am I going to get rejected anyways or do I still have a chance?

If you don’t have the grades, the Essay will (likely) not get you accepted. If you do have the grades, a killer essay will help you get accepted over other students that also have the grades.

Looking at the common data set will give you a sense of the grades you’ll need.

http://www.ir.ufl.edu/data_OLD_CDS/cds2013-2014.pdf

C7 will list the relative importance of each of the academic and nonacademic factors, such as GPA and Essays. Both GPA and the Essay are listed as Very Important, while the Test (SAT/ACT) scores are listed as Important.

Another way to look at it, UF is using holistic admissions. 50% is based on GPA/Class Rigor/Test Scores and 50% is based on ECs/Leadership/Essays. So the Essay maters, but if you don’t have the grades (GPA/Rigor/Test Scores) you’re not likely to get accepted.

Good Luck!

My grades are within the average standards but not above average, same with my test scores. Hopefully I can get in still! Thanks
