Essays

When are you guys going to start them?

I wasn't planning to start them until the summer, but I was playing Bad Company 2 when a great idea for a REALLY original essay hit me. I just created an outline for it.. but I'm going to cultivate this over a long period of time.

I'm probably only using this essay for my reach schools. I don't think it is TOO much of a risk but I want something safe for my matches/safeties that I'm confident I'll get into with a well written but more run-of-the-mill essay. (its for the common app)

I'm right in the middle 50% for JHU in almost everything minus class rank (right outside top 10% in competitive public HS). Thus.. I need something to set me apart. 2090 on the SAT puts me JUST below their average... insignificant. My UW GPA by the time I apply senior year will probably be at their average (below average now with a 3.62 UW... some crap throughout sophmore/junior year screwed me up a bit).

When are you starting your essays? :P

I always started my essays last minute. But a good tip I learned (after I applied and was admitted to college; figures I can’t really use this tip now.) is that you should write the essay in advanced, get it to how you like it, and then wait about a month or two–or to a point where you’ve, for the most part, forgotten what you’ve written, and then re-read your essay.

If you wait till the essay has kind of dropped from you mind, you get a better objective view of it and can better pick out the holes, the problem areas, in grammar errors, etc.
I found that this tends to work very well.

Whereas if you write an essay and go over it immediately after, most people tend to skim over it or read it lightly since they’re already familiar with what’s in it.

^ I liked that and i find it very true. i read over my past essays and i’m like wow this is crap.

I’ll probably start in august, i don’t really want to think about them right now >.<

I have 3 or 4 ideas for potential essays. I’ll probably be writing a rough draft of each essay somewhere in early July and fine tuning them throughout the summer. Hopefully I’ll have chosen a favorite by October/November.

Im starting as soon as they are available, to get like 6 month to do ED
