If you appeal, don’t do it alone. Have the test prep company appeal on your behalf. From ETS’ perspective, you are more likely to “doctor” your scores (they are graded paper tests, right?) than a disinterested company is. As @JustOneDad said, you will be their poster child. Ask them for free test preparation help for your next sitting, as well. They may give you a one-on-one tutor to get you above 2300 in exchange for using your story in their advertising. This could be a very good thing!
The best thing for you and to not lose time is taking the test again. If you scored that on the past, you had covered most of the vocab, writing, and math. The test should be easy for you now.
Alright, I feel a lot better now. I thought they would need me to take it in like a week but with time to prepare j think I’ll do okay. Any other tips on the appeal? I’d rather not have to retake it
Can anyone else verify that they won’t give me a timeframe to justify the score I got?
They won’t. They will give you a refund and you will use that money to take the test whenever you want. You should be find. Take some practice tests to see your range. Good luck!!!
Alright, that honestly makes me feel so much better that i won’t have to cram in a week or two to take the test. They said they will take my highest score if i verify it so if i get day s 740 in reading, they will take that and its basically a superstore but all for only one test correct? That seems to be what they’re saying in the letter thats what it was getting at.
Take some practice tests, and when you feel ready, take the test. You should know what was your range when you took the test on November. If they see that you get a low score, they will be 100% sure that you cheat.
Sue them
So, how specific has ETS been about how this will work? If you retake the test and score equivalent or better, it sounds all good. Does that mean they just forget about the allegations of cheating?
But, what if you score, say, a 720? That would be a score not quite as high as the ones you got on the first test, but should be enough to validate the previous scores. Do they let the previous test stand so you get the small benefit of super scoring, or is that one going to be wiped no matter what?
Yeah, you can clarify what they say to you.
Yeah they said if i am within 100 points for math and reading and 120 for writing I can keep the score I had if I do not win my appeal. They also said however that they will take the higher score if I score higher on the retest
I only feel they will give me a harder test because I have to take it alone at an arranged location.
Hm. A hundred points. About a Standard Deviation. That seems pretty reasonable.
That seems fair. They know that is pretty rare or impossible in a short time that a student increase like 800 from the first test. The test will be the same as other students so you should be able to get the same score range.
Okay anyone else have any ideas on things to say or evidence for the appeal, or can point me to anyone who has won an appeal?
I have to submit my argument by next Monday so anything else anyone can think of is greatly appreciated
Well, it is trite to say, but if you received an 800 and someone else in the room also received an 800 using the same version of the test, you would expect that the pattern of darkened circles would match that other person’s pattern, whether you copied or not. Getting pretty much all the answers correct on the same format of test pretty much requires the same pattern of darkened circles.
Your main argument will be a time-progression of test results from your test prep center. And your best presentation is to have the test-prep company provide them (or sign a notarized affidavit to that effect).
For me it is puzzling that your scratch sheets pointed to a different answer than you ultimately chose. You need to explain that as well.
And, as I said previously, this may be a “free” chance to strive for a 2300+. I would love to test in a private setting with no other test-takers or other distractions.
Does anyone know anyone who has won their appeal? It seems most of the outcomes have not been reported
The appeal is dicey. It seems to me that your best chances, under the circumstances offered, is to re-take the test.
Anyone have any other ideas for this appeal? I think we’ve covered a lot but anything additional will help
