European Experience

My daughter did her middle school years in Switzerland and Canada as we were expats there. She has traveled all over the world and has a very global perceptive, is there a way to highlight that on her college application or mention it in essay or interview? Any benefit?

I think it could be to her advantage to focus her Common App essay on her overseas experiences, but only if she is able to incorporate them into an effective essay. My daughter, who spent most of her formative years in Europe (we returned to the US prior to her starting 10th grade) did exactly this in her common app essay. Whether or not it helped or not, I cannot say, but she was accepted to her early action school, which is considered a reach for most.

I thought so, if colleges like geographical diversity then she is as diverse as they get.

Yes, I think kids who have spent years abroad in American International schools as expats have an advantage in elite college admissions. I don’t have stats but between H and me we have several cousins whose kids have spent between 7-12 years abroad all have gained admissions to top colleges and universities and from what I hear, lots of their classmates also are attending elite schools. They are also fluent in several languages.

If the Canadian and European experiences make their way into the essay naturally, fine, but if not, there is usually another place on the application to note them. A supplementary essay, often optional, is offered by many colleges (I honestly forget if it is on the common app or on college supplements). Or any question that asks “What else should we know about you?” Since it was middle school, the info won’t be listed otherwise, so I think it would be important to somehow include mention of this experience on the application and in the interviews.
