Where do students who live up north go for hurricane evacuations. I know that the school will take students to Texas (I think it's Texas) Or we can go home. But where will students go for the most part...with the school or home?

Some go home, some go to friend’s homes, some with apartments in the city stay there. The “official” evacuation destination is Jackson MS.

There are a bunch of options. Basically you can evacuate by bus, train, or plane to go home or to a friend’s house. Or you can evacuate with someone you’ve met here at school if their family lives in the area. You can also go with Tulane to Jackson University in Mississippi, which a lot of people actually did and really liked. Jackson, as the “host” college, planned tons of activities for the visiting students, had grocery and shopping shuttles, had food, had movies… I personally flew home to New York, but a lot of girls on my hall went to Jackson and didn’t mind it at all. In addition, Jackson had shuttles to their airport in case once you got there, you wanted to book a flight home.

Speaking from experience - when we got word about evacuating for Gustav this year, I originally was going to go with my roommate to his house in Memphis, but ended up flying home to Chicago at the last minute. Quite honestly, even if you don’t have a solid “hurricane plan” before coming here, everyone is really helpful in terms of evacuating. The Honors Program director actually sent out a BUNCH of e-mails to students within the program with open spots in cars that were evacuating/requests for carpools, and the School of Architecture had a Facebook group set up to help students find rides out.

Out of my friends, most ended up snagging plane tickets/a ride home, but had a few ride with other friends to their houses.

I know that I was personally kind of scared at the prospect of evacuating for a hurricane, but Tulane is definitely very proactive about evacuations. In the event of an evacuation, we get out of the city MUCH earlier than the mandatory city-wide evacuation gets sent out.

If anyone has any questions about Tulane in general, don’t hesitate to PM or e-mail me! I’m a current student and I’d love to help out anyone with concerns or questions about Tulane.
