So...who has gotten in with a C in an AP class (junior year) that wasn't related to their intended major? I'm curious because I got a C in AP calculus, but I'm applying as a humanities/philosophy major and was just wondering whether or not my C is going to be the death of my application. Granted, I cannot conclude much by someone saying that they got a C and still got into Harvard, but I simply want to know whether or not it has happened before. As well, before anyone points it out, I realize that my chances are extremely slim because of the C, but, again, I'm just curious if anyone has gotten in with a C, nothing more.

i’m getting a c in calc bc too, and my intended majors are english and earth science.

:(

I’m applying with two C’s from both sophomore and junior years. Neither were in my intended major(government or philosophy). There wasn’t even a good reason for them besides indolence. I’m just plain reckless. At least with transfer admission, atonement is possible…

I got a C for second quarter in calc BC but only semester grades go on our transcripts. I had a B first semester and an A second. I did however get a real C for first semester in physics C. I plan to major in linguistics.

My D got a C+ and it was only an honors class (chem in 20th grade). Also probable humanties/phil major! She had a straight A first semester and switched schools and … “Schtoff” happened (long story). If a college would take THAT (tough transition) semester off her GPA, instead of freshman, which is (in part) due to it being a tough transition - her entire GPA goes from 3.7 to 3.85! Of course no school is going to “play around” with numbers to see that. But it’s pretty blatant when you look at the transcript chronologically and suddenly all As turn to Bs and a C…then right back up. Fingers crossed for all of ya.

I got in with a C on my midyear report (and a couple Bs).

Good luck guys!

Aren’t you AA, eating food?

Just sayin’, it’s not like there’s the same standards.

By C, do you mean a quarter grade or a final grade? Worst grade i ever got as a final grade was B- in precalc honors, which is harder than Calc AB & BC at my school. I barely survived that course. My final grade was 80.06 or something similar lol. I have gotten Cs for certain quarters in a few classes but never as a final grade.

THIS is why there shouldn’t be AA!!! People begin to automatically assume that URM’s have lower scores, less ECs, etc… than other races. I’m sure whites/asians have also gotten in with a C. If everything was fair, people wouldn’t question URMs about their stats, and other objective parts.

Luckily my school doesn’t have mid-year grades, so I’ve always been able to improve my second semester grades. Except my mid-year report sucked so badly this year, with a B- in AP Bio.

fighting to keep my head above the water in Calc (aka teetering on the edge of B-/C+). I hate math and don’t know why I took Calc at all this year.
considering dropping next semester in favor of AP econ. because I really hate every second of it.

also, I do not at all intend to go into anything involving math/science ever.

The last C I got was in 5th grade, when I was part of a 5-person group to travel to the local middle school for math since we had already completed all the elementary school math. needless to say I wasn’t part of that group for very long.

I had a B- average in all classes.

Of course, this was in 7th grade.

…
thanks for the idea! i ask you for copyright permission…
good luck on your app!

I agree with ansar’s point. No one is assuming an AA person is less intelligent than a white or asian who gets into HYPS. What he (we) is/are saying is that minorities (nonasian of course) can get away with ALOT more scorewise than we can. Don’t want to get into a huge fight here. I was just trying to clarify that point because I felt his point was valid.

Tehe. I hope that one C in the last year and a half won’t kill my chances (4.0 for midyear report…yay - I was proud of myself lol).

You’d be surprised.

I have several friends who received similar mid-year reports as me (one of my best friends who is white actually received multiple C’s on his in addition to several Bs). All of them were accepted to great colleges (meaning ivies) during the RD round. This one friend (after getting into Stanford early) was later accepted to Princeton, Dartmouth, and Columbia (with a likely letter). Another girl I know (white; didn’t get C’s, but many Bs) was accepted to Harvard. Yet another girl I know was accepted to Penn and Stanford.

I guess the moral of the story is, if they want you enough, as they clearly wanted all of these people, one bad grade isn’t going to stand in your way.

Oh… another note is all of us were taking the most advanced classes our school offered, all of us having completed our school’s math curriculum and moved into Linear Algebra/Differential Equations (that’s what the C was in).

eating food. you rock.

can you answer this question for me? i am asian, so i am not a URM
