I was just emailed for an alumni interview (I said yes, of course) and now I'm nervous as heck. Anyway, I just want to know if everybody who applies gets these types of interviews? (I'm thinking "yes" but I'm not sure)

No, they can’t offer interviews to all applicants. It depends on how many people in an area are applying and how many interviewers are available there

An nterview will be offered as long as there is an available alumnus in your area. You do not necessarily have to email (who?) to schedule an interview-----usually the assigned interviewer will contact you via email at his or her convenience.

I said that I was emailed, so they contacted me first. I apologize if I didn’t make that clear. Anyway, thanks for the clarification. :)

^Sorry Sophie, I wasn’t reading your original post carefully enough.

Not everybody gets an interview, its based on regional availability. Resist the temptation to believe its a good sign that you were contacted. Harvard tries to give an interview to as many applicants as possible.

^ I, of course, have resisted this temptation, but I can’t control other people (ie: parents) from thinking it is a good sign. I would hope that my parents just see the chance to sell myself as a “good sign” (or whatever you think constitutes as a good sign), rather than thinking that an interview from Harvard was a huge hurdle that I had to jump in order to be considered.

What constitutes a good sign for me is reading the words “I am delighted…” Interviews don’t have that much weight when it comes to the actual decision. Its more of a promotion of the school and making sure you aren’t some sort of closet psychopath.

Ah I see. I don’t think I’m a closet psychopath (lololol). Unfortunately by now, my parents have probably told ‘x’ amount of family members and it’s getting pretty annoying (I guess it was because I was deliberately obfuscated in my way of saying it was just an alumni interview). Anyway, thank you all for helping me with my question! I was originally pretty worried that the interview may have been one of the more “deciding” factors in my application, but not anymore. :P

Quick question: Hypothetically, if the applicant happens to be from an area where there are not enough alumni to cover all the applicants, would the applicants somehow be ranked to get an interview?

No .
