for all you ib-er's out there, i was just wondering if it would help me if I bought an AP World History prep book for my HL history test. Any comments, suggestions, tips would be great, especially from ib grads. thanks a lot!

What IB history course are you in? HL focuses on a specific area, History of the Americas or History of Europe are the most common I think. As your teacher for a syllabus, the IB curriculum covers very specific topics (it isn't a crapshoot like the AP history tests) and then use only the relevant sections of the review book. You should be able to go into the test knowing exactly what you need to know.

IB history focuses on contemporary history (1900-onward) and like sheetmusic said "History of the Americas or History of Europe." Remember the russian revolutions.

Your IB class picks topics. And there are specific IB study guides out there. I don't remember the exact name though.

Can you guyz help me? My class is officially called "IB World Topics" but i dont know what books I should buy for prep...our topics include the rise and fall of single party states the and cold war; it's mostly european history, but I want to make sure before I make any purchases.

ahh there is a specific book called "Single party states" and it's by a IB examiner. depends also on the dictator you're studying, for example, the exam questions might be on peron, mao, nasser, castro, hitler, nyere, mussolini, lenin etc...so your school will pick a few of these to study.

as for the coldwar, you just have to read lots of books, your school will choose an area of cold war to focus on...such as the period leading to detente...or the origins. no specific book either, but you don't need any. the topic doesnt really focus on mccarthyism, but big concepts and it requires a wide knowledge about hotspots (korea, vietnam, cuban missile crisis, berlin wall) and historiography.

As for European history, which topics are you doing within it? there are no specific guides i can think of, but all you need to do is to read history books of that topic and you'll be fine.

Hmm as for any tips...IB HL history depends on luck- you might or might not get the topics you want. I did my exam 3 weeks ago, and i got mussolini, hitler and lenin/trotsky=). i also studied for italian/german unification but the topics for it werent that good. You should write lots and lots of essays from old exam papers, and know a wide range of things- even if it's not in detail. you should also keep up to date, concise notes...although i was really crap in that area. Bad thing about IB history is that once you learn a topic in the first term of IB1, you forget everyone when you reach the 2nd year. that happened to me with russian revs, and i had to relearn everything again!

my school is doing 20th century world hist. and 19th century european history... any good books for those topics?

I'm doing those same topics. I'll ask my teacher today what book we are using. The school provides study guides in all IB subjects. I'll get back to you.

we're doing modern european history (mid 19th~20th century) and modern chinese history. we're using books that prepares us for reader for the GCSE/Standard Grade and A-Level/Higher exams.
