So is "Asian" in this thread just PC-code for "immigrant-generation Chinese?" It's hard to believe, for example, that the cultures in, say, North Korea, Mongolia, Malaysia, and Pakistan are so similar that these broad generalizations fit. These comments DO perfectly fit a family I know where the kids were born in California and the parents in China.

My asian mom keeps giving me crap for deciding to major in econ (esp every time she sees the doctor) "Why don't you major in premed? Why don't you go to med school? What kind of job are you going to get with a BA in econ? blablabla"

After she stops blabbing about how stupid I am for deciding to become a doctor, I say "I'm going to become a a corporate financier. I'm going to be worth $50mil when I'm 35. Leave me alone."

Tell your mom about income trends for most medical specialties. That might shut her up, too. Managed medical care has not been good for doctor incomes.

I'd rather have parents that don't care about grades than parents who obsess over them. Seriously my mom gave me crap for getting a B- in AP Enviro. Well what do you expect? She failed chem and never took another science.

And she still thinks I'll change to engineering. I'd stick a finger down my throat and kill myself before switching to and engineering major. Gees, let it go, it's not going to happen. I hate to crush "dreams" but I peaked at B- in physics. And I have no interest whatsoever in any of the sciences. Seriously the talk of chem or physics makes me want to a)puke, b)jump off a bridge, c)run myself over with my own car, or d) shoot myself, or e) any combination of the above.

RT: I tried telling her that doctors here get sued all the time and they don't actually make that much money, but she wouldn't listen. "Well it's such a prestigious job. They're just jealous." Firstly, I'd rather not get sued. Secondly, I'm not perfect, and I'd rather not hold someone's life in my hands. Thirdly, being a doctor IS NOT PRESTIGIOUS. Investment banking is prestigious. Consulting is prestigious. Morgan Stanley is prestigious. Harvard Business School is prestigious. And in finance, the school you go to actually matters, so I might ACTUALLY receive more marginal benefit from going to Harvard/Penn/Columbia/whatever for grad school. Well I'd rather have an esoteric job (financier), make a lot of money, be happy, and do what I love to do than give into the biggest asian cliche of all time.

FutureNYUStudent, you are my new favorite forumite. My sons loved your post, too. It's your life, stick to your guns. And don't run over yourself with your own car...

futurnyustudent: Thats right, you should do what you wnat to do. Honestly, **** what anyone else thinks ( no disrespect to you rmom though). My parents are actually the other way around. They both studied medicine and the last thing they want to me to study is medicine. Thye its way too much of a hassle, not that much money in it and a huge danger when it comes to sues etc. When I told my mome I wanted to major in math and econ she sort of freaked out (mostly because of the math aprt) , but she´s gotten used to the idea and now supports me 100%. Maybe your mom, with time, will udnerstand that you´ll be happier wth econ than premed ( aghhh).

My parents only critisize one thing.
-Whenever I get anything less than a B in any subject (especially English tests).
This one time, I was answering a question in a SAT II bio test:
what hormone's level increases in women during pregnancy? I only knew one of the answers so I picked it...Testosterone.
Anyway, My mom made fun of me for like an hour when she heard that.
