Excellent Article about Kenyon Admissions

Hi everyone,
Here is a very good article about Kenyon's admission's process. I hope it will help all of you as you work through your applications and make your decisions! I remember how stressful it can be and I wish you all the best of luck! I am a freshman Molecular Biology major here and love it; please let me know if you have any questions!

hey what are your initials and where do u live on campus?
I am also a mol bio major maybe i know u

Hi KC

Great article! Thanks for posting!

How are you enjoying your time at Kenyon? Are you from out of state? If yes, was it hard to adjust?

I think Kenyon would be a good fit for my son. He is interested in something like English or creative writing. He is still trying to decide if he wants to go out of state (we are from California).

Any impressions, thoughts etc would be great!

Oh, have you visited Denison? Are the two schools pretty similar?

thanks!
FresnoMom

I really love Kenyon. EVERYONE is soooo friendly and welcoming and accepting. Yes, I am from out of state, but I came from a high school just a bit smaller than Kenyon in a small town, so it really hasn't been hard to adjust socially (but I think getting used to living away from home can be hard for everyone). I haven't visited Denison, but I have heard from lots of people that they liked Kenyon a lot better (which makes sense since they decided to go here). I can't tell you much about the English department other than that everyone I know loves their English classes and the department obviously has an excellent reputation. Good luck!

I am mailing in my application, personal essay, brag sheet, and creative writing portfolio tommorrow. I also have my alumni interview tommorrow at 1 PM at local Starbucks. takes a deep breath

Big day tommorrow.

Good Luck White Materia!

Fresnomom,
My son and I visited Kenyon and Denison (as well as a bunch of other schools) during a whirlwind tour in April. Here's the link. I hope you find it useful.

Kenyon and Denison are both great schools. I think there are many similarities, although Denison seems to be more future-oriented, maybe pre-professional, while Kenyon emphasizes tradition, especially scholarship in the the liberal arts. Kenyon has been known for decades for it's English department and writing. Check out the Kenyon Review. I don't think you could go wrong with either school. It depends on what you son wants in a school.

How did the interview go??? That is wonderful that you have your application completed already!

DDad......EXCELLENT review! I am surprised I haven't come across it earlier.....

Does your son still prefer Kenyon? Are there any other differences between Kenyon and Denison that you remember?

FresnoMom

This article was a nice find! I'm in love with Kenyon and I'm beginning to get worried about my chances since I see my stats as being pretty average in their applicant pool, so it's nice to see that they are very fair.

The interview went so well!

The lady was so wonderful, she was extremely intelligent, articulate, and interesting. She was also very sincere about how much she loves Kenyon and made me feel very comfortable. She was telling me about some of her experiences, about the feelings she had when she came back to Kenyon for Alumni Reunion among other things.

She told me she is going to write me a very positive response letter to Admissions, so I should be getting a great report from her, and she wished luck during the application process. I told her how much I desired to go to Kenyon so she promised to let them know. I feel really good right now. Whew.

Hi Everyone!!! I've got a question...
Is it true that after every interview, the interviewer will tell you what a strong applicant you are, how you will fit in to Kenyon very well... i.e. basically trying to make sure that you apply to Kenyon? Or do they mean it when they say so? This is so as my interviewer told me that I am the strongest applicant out of all the prospective candidates she interviewed that day... and thus, I was wondering whether she said this to ensure that I apply to Kenyon..

Fresnomom,
Denison has more students, only 500 or so, but it seemed to feel bigger than Kenyon. Maybe I was influenced by it being Denison University, rather than College. The students seemed similar and many of them applied to both schools. There may be more consistently preppy and greek dress at Denison. The Greek system is stronger at Denison and it has a larger percentage of students as members. It has been even stronger in the past. I think Denison is intent on improving its reputation as a "serious" institution of higher learning. It might be one of the "up and coming" LACs if they're successful. That might already be true. Kenyon has always considered itself to be a serious and scholarly institution (especially in English and writing), but I think they would like to be better known and "hotter" nationally.

I believe Denison is known for giving more merit aid than Kenyon, although Kenyon also has merit aid. Parents who have students at Kenyon have emphasized how the faculty, staff, and other students seem to take a personal interest in their students. By the descriptions, Kenyon is very vigorous academically, and the same can probably be said for Denison.

Both campuses are beautiful, but different. Denison seems more manicured and park-like, with a greater percentage of more modern buildings. Kenyon's traditional buildings are gothic, with many trees around them, but to me at least, it felt less like being in a park, and more like being in an old village built in the woods. Or maybe the village is so old, that the woods grew up, around and in it.

I believe Middle Path is key to understanding Kenyon. They choose to protect it, keep it unpaved, and build everything around it, rather than replace or improve it. You're not supposed to use cell phones on Middle Path because that's considered rude and cutting yourself off from others. They don't mind being old-fashioned and traditional in some things because they believe what worked then still works. By contrast, you have wireless internet access at the Middle Ground Caf

doddsdad: How on earth did you remember that my husband went to Kenyon? ;)

weenie,
Darned if I know! My mind seems to be filled with information that is typically useless, but every once and awhile something rises to the surface...Doesn't your son have an uncle or two or a grandparent who also attended Kenyon? I remember you saying that family tradition didn't keep him from choosing Denison over Kenyon.

doddsdad:
Yes, his father went there, his grandfather and his brother (greatuncle?), a cousin (all on his father's side). We bucked tradition for better scholarship money. Oh well. Kenyon's loss. ;)

Hi Ddad, Weenie, KC

Great post DDad....I printed it out for my son. These "personal" narratives are incredibly helpful!

My son has decided to drop Kenyon from his list but Denison is still on it!

KC....best to you at Kenyon!

Thanks again for all your help!
