Exceptional funding

I am a little confused about the amount of exceptional funding a presidential scholarship recipient could receive. The web site says 8 half units. Does this mean for the entire year?
Thank you for any clarification if anyone knows how much is potentially funded per semester and per summer, should you qualify.

Any info at all regarding this would be much appreciated. I have heard my son mention it, but am unclear on how it works, particularly as related to summer study abroad programs.

The way they explained it to me is that it is a total of 8 half-units beyond the 8 semesters the scholarship covers. So it wouldn't be "per year." It would be total for your entire undergraduate career. And they won't let you use it to cover all of 4 units instead of 1/2 of 8 units.

If you took 8 units in one summer it would cover 1/2 of the tuition and you would have no more exceptional funding available.

-or-

If you took 4 units one summer, it would cover 1/2 the tuition and you would still have 4 half-units eligibility of exceptional funding for a future summer.

(Hope that wasn't too confusing!)

Oh - I fogot to mention: you can also use the exceptional funding to pay for (1/2 of) units beyond the 18 unit maximum per semester - it doesn't have to be for summer.

to college, thanks for the info, you made it very clear. I was wondering too.

Tocollege: Thanks so much for the explanation. Did the person who explain this to you a representative of USC? I really appreciate your response above.

Yes, it was in a group session at orientation. (My mom asked the question and is the one who actually understood the answer - she had to re-explain it to me!)

That clears it up for me beautifully. Thanks!
