I checked my financial aid awards today and in addition to my Presidential Scholarship, there is something called the University Scholarship for $1000 a semester and I can't find any information about this on the USC website. Did anyone else get this too and does anyone know what it is?

Also got this…I think it may be the extra money for NMF Presidential Scholars?

Yes-- it is an extra merit scholarship (which is renewable usually). Several merit scholars (below Trustee) will find an unexpected “University Scholarship” added to their packages. Yea for you!!

I had one of these too. I never found out exactly why I got it or what it is, all I know is it saved me $14,000 all things said and done.

Congratulations! USC gives additional merit awards, as you’ve read about here on cc. Top merit scholars may get these additional awards so check your accounts. Your University scholarship of $1000/semester adds up to an additional $8000 over 4 years.

camomof3, my S is a Trustee and got a University scholarship of $2500/year. But that was 4 years ago. I thought T’s were still eligible for this award.

^^ interesting, madbean. We were told they were off tuition, that’s why I assumed that they wouldn’t be for T’s since they are already at full tuition. This is even better if more students can get them!!

Where can I check to see if I got this?

…

^it should show under your financial aid awards on your USConnect.

oh so I can’t get any of those if I did not apply for financial aid… sadness

No, I think you can. That is just where you see it. Check that box. If you don’t have it, then I am afraid I don’t know where else to tell you to look! Sorry!

No its says my finanical packet “is not ready” or something. Its ok! I am completely happy with my Deans Scholarship!

Congrats on the Dean’s!

wait so this is renewable for 4 years right?

Yes ^^^ You will get a letter in the mail (pretty soon I’d think) congratulating you on receiving this new award, yadda yadda. I believe the details of it lasting 4 years are in that letter.

What happens to the scholarship $ at USC for those that end up going somewhere else? Is it possible for Presidential Scholarship receipients to get bumped up to Trustee if enough Trustee’s end up declining their offer and going somewhere else?

^ I would think this is built into their yield. We haven’t heard posters post about getting bumped up after May 1 (with the exception of the Mork scholarship recipient last year-- but that may have been simply due to timing of the award last year), but maybe they aren’t on CC.

^it is built into their yield. There are no bumps after the award letters are sent, except for last year’s Mork.

"What happens to the scholarship $ at USC for those that end up going somewhere else? "

It goes back in the pot for next year.

“Is it possible for Presidential Scholarship receipients to get bumped up to Trustee if enough Trustee’s end up declining their offer and going somewhere else?”

Nope. the Trustee decisions have already been made and offered .

In the recent past, USC has offered Trustee Scholarships to about 200 students. About 130-145 consistently matriculate. This must be the number they target. I find it interesting that about 2/3 of Trustee awardees decide to turn down all their other colleges (HYSP, MIT, et al) while about 1/3 do not. Of that 1/3, some may be financially immune to the costs (lucky them!), some may get fabulous FinAid at their ivy (low income) to make the costs equivalent, and some others must be willing to sacrifice to go to some other school.
