Our family was discussing computer and other tech necessities for Exeter next year. I assumed S would need his own printer. My husband seemed to feel like he would not. Husband went to an Ivy 15 years ago, and no one had printers in dorms, but used shared printers on the floor or emailed papers. I cannot believe that a student would not need printing capabilities, but I am not a computer person. To what extent is electronic submission of work the norm - or the exception?

A printer is definitely not needed. I have one, but I print out the majority of stuff in the computer labs (it's easier to double-side on those since they do it automatically, whereas with mine I have to manually double-side...also I think the cost for that is included in our tuition or something?). However, printers are really convenient to have, esp if you like to edit essays on paper (I find I do a better job this way) and it's 2 am in the morning. Oh and you don't have to get a nice one... I got my printer for around $25 and it's amazing. Also you can ask dormmates, but that might get annoying after the first couple of times.
As far as electronic submission goes...it really depends on the teacher. Of my 3 years at Exeter, I only submitted papers via email three or four times. I think teachers like it more when you physically submit it (easier for them).

I don't go to boarding school right now but I went to a summer program at one last year, and I'm guessing that the issues with printers and stuff will be prety much the same.

I'd recommend a printer. It gets annoying when someone keeps asking you over and over and over again to borrow your printer, and you really don't want to have to go to the lab every single time you want to print something. The times that they're open might be restricted (for example I don't think you can leave your dorm at 10pm and go print something in the library), and when you're panicking trying to print something 10 minutes for class begins, you don't want to have to wait in line or something for the other 10 people who need to print stuff. (actually i dunno about that there might be dozens of printers that everyone can use)

I'm not sure if my guesses are right, but this is what I thought from having been at a summer program at choate last year, so if it were me, I'd recommend one!
:)

No, the printer is an accessory that students do not need, it is like an electric cooler in that sense. Whenever I have an English paper due, I email myself my paper the morning of, and when class rolls around I go to the basement of the English building and print out my paper at the lab. A lot of kids do it, but the lab has about 15 computers so it usually isn't too much of a problem.

For history papers, you get release time. You can print your paper whenever and wherever as long as it is due by the specified time.

Oh by the way, I attend Exeter. And everything tuesdayair said I agree.

just to add on to that, you can email yourself the papers, but Exeter also has this webfolders thing that you can store everything in... you can access everything on there from anywhere with internet access with your password. so you can save your papers on there and not have to worry about your inbox being too full

I third what tuesdayair said. Printers aren't necessary, but try to get one if you can. I've managed to survive for two years without one, but I've had a couple of late-night emergencies when the computer lab was closed and I had to run around the dorm searching for one. Not fun.

does the academic center have a useable printer?

See this is precisely the type of post i was talking about. Fair enough you MAY actually be interested in printers in Exeter ... i doubt it but whatever let's just say that you are. Was it actually neccesary to mention that you husband went to an ivy ?? This smells like a self congratulatory thread and what do you know it's an exonian thread no suprise there. An excercise is professional NAME DROPPING.

Plus your language sounds awfully verbose and unnecesary. I mean who the heck actually says :"To what extent is electronic submission of work the norm - or the exception?" Your trying way too hard to sound intellegent. ACT NORMAL !!

Man you people are soo pretentious !!! Get REAL ... and talk about something useful for once.

You guys are embarrasing Exeter, your making a great school seem like it's filled to the brim with pretentious and superficial people and making the school seem very unnatractive in the process. STOP IT.

see you guys just validated EVERYTHING i said on this thread.

um, i just want to know about a printer. i don't care what they say.

phelps academy center has a printer in the day student computer lab but usually the computers are all being used. it doesn't really matter though because you can walk 30 sec to either the science building one or the phillips one.

Hey artsmart I was not talking about you I was talking about Liddyb4's pretentious post. Read my post again. But still did you notice that ONLY exonians seem to be interrested in a topic as random as printers ??? NO ONE ELSE discusses these trivial things!!

i know, but you're disrupting the thread w/a post that has NOTHING to do w/the topic. some people do care. school starts in less that a week for heaven's sake. we want to be prepared but not spend money we don't need to. it's like you're advertising your thread.

I would care, whether or not I went to Exeter, Choate, Kent, SPS, Emma Willard, WHATEVER.
There seems to be a majority of Exeter students who are ACTIVE posters, at least, so the majority of "trivial" threads are by Exeter students.

um, dude. if we changed the title to 'Wherever the Heck You Want: Personal/Shared printers?' would you be happy? it just so happens that the poster would like to know more specifically about Exeter's resources, which can infer the fact that they don't think there are gold encrusted ones with magical colors only Exonians can see around every corner because they are better than the other schools. it means that they want to know if you need a printer. viola!

Hey, I have nothing against you guys being interested in printers I mean I am interested in totally random stuff too ! Like what coloured rubber bands to bring, the average size of an exonian's mug, the most popular clothing brands at exeter, and ofcourse the brand of battaries people use in their graphing calculators at exeter. No i'm kidding, but really I have nothing against you guys asking about printers and for the record i never said anything about putting exeter in the title that makes sense like you said because it's specific to printers at exeter. My problem was what i percived to be the pretentious style in which the original poster asked the question and that was IT. Ask about printers for all I care it's none of my business really BUT when you make ALL american prep schools look bad by reaffirming the idea that american prep schoolers are pretentious THAT is where i take a stand. Because almost all exonians AT exeter already are NOT pretentious at ALL it's the wannabees and gunnobees that give it a bad name. DON'T SHOOT ME ! and have a nice day :)

.......lol

taken from did god go to exeter thread.

and no where there do i mention printers :) but still this thread is getting too much attention already so this is my last post my point has been made take it or leave it.

yep you brought the attention to it.
