Exeter Q&A for Admittees for Fall 2016!

@Center Exeter will be good for him. He won’t have too much time to occupy and will always be around people.

How do students print (are there printers available in the library? Do we have to buy our own?)?
Regarding the $900 stipend they give FA students, can you use that towards academic supplies (notebooks, paper, bookbag, etc.?)

@Anonymousia the FA stipend can be used in the book store for notebooks, pens etc… I do not think it applies for book bags. Sometimes roommates will buddy up and share a printer- these plans are made over summer. One contributes paper, ink etc… I do not know of any central printers. I think there might be that capability in the library- but very inconvenient for most.

@Anonymousia there are actually free printers available to all students all over campus. We use a system called uPrint that lets you add a document to an online queue and then print it from any printer. There is at least one printer in every academic building and there are also more in places like the PAC and the library.

I think FA stipend actually doe apply for backpacks in the bookstore, actually, but just keep in mind that these supplies and backpacks are all a lot more expensive than if you were to buy them on your own. Because of that, I would personally take care of at the backpack, and maybe some of the less expensive parts of your school supplies, like pencils and pens. The rest you an totally get at the bookstore.

Here’s a silly question: what does it mean to get a dickie? I know why people get them, but how does the system work?

@junemaybees so I dickie is basically an unexcused absence, meaning, you weren’t in the health center, at your grandma’s funeral in Oklahoma, or some other event where the school knew you wouldn’t be in class.

You get 3 dickies per term, which sadly means you can only miss 3 class periods per term. Not three days; three friggin classes.

This isn’t too bad, but it can really be annoying because if you get more than 3 dickies in one term it means you have to go on stricts, which is short for restrictions, or the 2 week period when you have 8pm check-in even on the weekends.

Basically: go to class, and when you really can’t (due to homework or some other reason), just don’t, lol. Teachers are typically understanding if you tell them the next class that you had a really important conflict and that you wouldn’t otherwise miss their class just to slack. If you didn’t get much sleep though, you can do this thing called fatiguing, which is when you go to the health center to sleep when you only got like 2 hours of the sleep the pervious night because you were doing your history paper. To avoid having to do these things (which you really shouldn’t have to do much at all as an underclassman anyway), just do your homework at a reasonable time each day and don’t save too much for the day of. I do this and it always gets me into trouble sometimes.

3 Unexcused absences? Do they show on your school transcripts?
What tops can girls wear?
Which do you prefer: North or south side dorms?
Can you specifically request to room with your friend?

Hi, I’m a current student at Exeter as well.

@Anonymousia I’m pretty sure the unexcused absences only show up on your transcript if you skip too many classes (an excessive amount). I’m not sure though because I’ve only ever dicked one class, and that was to protest at Trump’s rally.

Girls can basically wear any shirt that isn’t athletic, but I’ve worn t-shirts with a flannel, so you can get away with a lot.

SOUTH SIDE!!

I’m pretty sure that you cannot request to room with a specific person, but you can request a dorm. However, these requests are often not honored. Exeter usually does a great job assigning dorms, though.

About the phys ed requirement, you can take theatre substitutes, right? But does that mean you won’t get the amount of PE credits needed to graduate?

Theater kids take Drama Sports, which counts for the PE credit.

I am sure that many of these questions will be answered at the sessions in April but here are a few general questions: is the E Book provided in a hard copy? Should a student bring a desk top computer or a laptop. If a laptop what do you recommend? Should we buy a personal printer? What do you take placement tests for besides language? (Math?) If lights out is 10:30 what do you do if you have more work to do? (Just get up early?)

@waterpololover what class is drama sports?

@Center
-Yes, they provide everyone with the E book.
-Student’s should bring a laptop so that they can bring it to class if needed.
-I really like Dell, but most people have Macs. It’s really up to you.
-Some student’s like the convenience of a personal printer, but they have free printers all around campus. I say that it’s not necessary, but again, it’s up to you.
-You’ll probably take placement tests for language and math, but not every student is required to.
-Lights are out at 11, but most dorms don’t enforce it. When I was a lower, my roommate and I would hop into bed and turn off the lights when the faculty member came to check, and after they left, we’d go back to work until we’d finished. Getting up early is another option, though.

@Anonymousia Drama sports is the PE class that all cast and crew members take during the term. Students do a short workout, and then they go and work on the production.

@waterpololover so you can just take theatre in replacement for phys ed for all four years?? What is “drama sports” formally known as (what class)? I tried looking for it in the course catalog but I couldn’t find it

@Anonymousia It’s called PEC109 for the cast or PEC112 for the crew. The course description is under Theater and Dance. You could hypothetically take it all three terms, but you’d have to be part of the cast or crew every term. A student outside of the theater program cannot take the class.

Thank you @waterpololover

1 - Does school rank? if so, is that just based on GAP in Exeter?
2- If a student plays team sports, will she still have time for study and receive grade A or that is impossible to have A?
3 - Can a student take AP at any grade?

What can you buy/do with the lioncard?

If I do the student work program, can I get the money transferred to the lioncard?

How is the dining hall food, really?

Do the ppl who take music lessons HAVE to perform at a concert or have juries (where they test the students to see their improvement)?

@funfun19

  1. Exeter does not rank.
  2. I play a sport all three seasons and I have received many A’s.
  3. We do not have AP courses at Exeter, but there are courses that are more advanced than AP, so many students choose to take the test. In order to have taken the prerequisites for one of these classes, the youngest students taking AP tests are lowers. Colleges know that we are not an AP school, though, so they expect us to take AP tests (except for schools abroad).

@Anonymousia
-Lioncards are used as i.d., your swab card to get into dorms, and you can store money for Grill and the bookstore on them. You can also buy bus tickets using money on your lioncard.
-You could transfer the money, but I recommend opening a bank account in town and just using a debit card. To date, I have never bought anything using my lioncard (although that’s pretty unusual). Money on lioncards tends to be a way for parents to send money, but if your parents don’t have money to give you (like mine), there’s really no point to add money yourself.
-I personally love the food. Some days are better than others (yesterday wasn’t great tbh), but people like to complai. In all honestly, we have better food than many (even most) colleges.
-With music lessons, it depends if you audit the course or if you take it for credit. If you take it for credit, then you have to attend a certain number of concerts each term, and I believe that there is a performance at some point.
