I posted the following question under "Air Force Academy," but I was wondering if any parents might know the answer? Thanks.

Does anyone here know how does one go about getting a senatorial or congressional nomination if he's a US citizen living in a foreign country?
One parent is registered to vote in Florida. Would the nomination be sought from the senator from that state?

I looked this up for a friend of my son that was interested in the USAFA last year. HE moved from Texas to Canada a couple of years ago. I concluded from some verbiage in a USNA booklet for prospective candidates that the Vice President's nomination was the only one he was eligible for, as he was a U.S. citizen living outside of the U.S. that has not maintained a domicile in the U.S. I'm not a lawyer, but if your parents maintained a domicile in the U.S. (own a home, pay property taxes, pay utilities, etc.) they they/you could be considered a constituent of a congressional district and would be eligible for nomination from the U.S. Representative and Senators representating your district as well as from the VP. If not then you would only be eligible for nomination from the VP. He decided that the USAFA was not for him and did not seek a nomination, so he did not follow up on this issue. Like candidatemom suggested, this should be addressed with Admissions Department, as you should apply for all available sources of nominations.

Thank you. S is still a few years off before actual application, but knowing this in advance is good. He could still change his mind about applying, but I'd hate to find out all of this at the last minute if he still wants to apply then.

If either of the candidate's parents are active military, I believe that the rules are different. Contact the Academy for further information.

Children of Active Duty and retired military (and I'm sure there are other categories) are eligible for Presidential Nominations. There may be an infinite number of Pres. Noms, however only 100 per year may receive appointments from this nomination source.
