Just applied to Experience Colby and was wondering about selectivity, how many students are accepted, and most of all how it impacts the admissions decisions. Are most or all spots for URM applicants? Also just a thread to discuss the 2014 program since I haven't found another one.

So all you have to pay for is travel expenses? And what is URM?

If you get a travel grant, they cover travel expenses. URM is underrepresented minority, like African American or Latino or Native American, etc. also includes first generation college students for the programs sake

If you get accepted to either Experience Colby program, the travel is all paid for by Colby. There’s around 30-40 students for each Experience Colby program, and around 50-60 for the Colby Live program for those after they have been offered admission. Not sure how it impacts the admissions decisions but it doesn’t hurt to come on campus and have an interview; it shows dedication too.

Also you don’t have to be a URM to apply and be accepted into the visit program. Some schools’ fly-ins are for URMs only and some have a travel grant depending on each individual’s financial situation. For Colby’s fly-ins, it’s not liimted to URMs and there’s no cost for anyone who is accepted, regardless of financial situation.

Thanks! So I’m applying to the Experience Colby program for this fall and I was wondering if you guys could help me out with one of the questions: “Briefly describe (between 150 and 250 words) how your personal experiences would add to the diverse perspectives at Colby or describe your involvement in diversity efforts in your school or community”. I’m not really sure what kind of diversity they’re looking for. Any ideas?

@mango2015 I’m applying too! My answer probably won’t be very helpful, but honestly just think about what makes you diverse whether it’s the way you think, approach problems, etc. I don’t think they’re looking for a specific type of diversity.

But since it’s only 150 to 250 words, can we really just describe it? Or is this somewhat anecdotal too?

@student197 I think that’s up to you. And thanks for the help!

Has anyone here been accepted to the program?

@rycoka I have! Have you?

@rycoka Where are you from? And what did you write about?

I’m from around Cleveland Ohio, and going to school in a middle class suburb, and also being a white male, I had a little bit of difficilty with the prompt at first. I basically wrote about a) drawing as much diversity as I could out of my situation and b) being diverse in the sense of my varied extracurricular involvements.

I got accepted too! Yay!
