I’m a student in high school approaching senior year and have been doing a lot of research and visits. I think I have finally found the university I want to attend. It has not only a great music program, but also one of the only two pharmacy colleges in the state, which is my other choice of study. My goal this high school year is to finally decide between majoring in music education or pre-pharmacy. My problem is this school requires 4 years of a foreign language to graduate. I only have three. I would have to drop my music theory course that I will be taking, which will greatly impact my decision for what I major in. The college will require me to take my fourth year of the language before graduating. I was wondering what people’s experiences with college foreign language courses are? Specifically Chinese if able which is what I will be taking. I also have the option to drop my music theory course and just take the fourth year in high school which would make my decision for music education much harder without experiencing a music theory course. Any thoughts or opinions on what I should do would be greatly appreciated!!! And experiences with college level music theory, chinese, etc.
Colleges mean level 4 - have you by any chance reached that level already (or AP)?
No, the class I will be taking is AP though
You could take your foreign language at a community college in the Spring, level 3 in college meets the “4 year” requirement. This way you’d still have space for Music Theory which I agree would be an important class for you to take.
