You guys are seriously so much better at explaining things than the IU registrar website. Yes, it has come to the point where I might need to retake Finite. If someone can break down the Extended X policy and how it works, I would be really grateful. I was just wondering what circumstances would allot one to use this policy, because it would be of much help to me.

Hahah, I’m sorry that class isn’t going well for you. It was bad for me too.

I’m using Extended X too for my calc class and my advisor just explained the policy to me the other day…

In your case, finish off the semester and fail finite as I’m going to fail Calc. Enroll in the class again next semester, as if you were taking it for the first time. There’s a date about 6 weeks into the semester called the “extended x deadline,” by which you need to contact the registrar and fill out an aplication for the extended-x credit stating that you are retaking finite for grade replacement. Assuming you’re approved, which is sounds like almost everyone is, your F (or whatever you get) will be completely removed from al of your records and your new grade will replace it. You can do this a total of three times as an undergrad.

Hope this helps. Math sucks.

Thank you! Such a relief knowing I can retake the class. I went and stopped by my advisor’s office today just to make sure I could retake it and was given the green light to do so. Now all I have to do is work my ass off and pray that I never, ever have to take a finite mathematics course ever again. And now I don’t have to study for my final, yay.

Lots of people have trouble with that class! I sure would.

A friend’s D took it in the summer session one year, just that class alone–stayed in B-town & worked part time. Did great when it was her only focus. I’m sure retaking it will sort of stink, but it will be better next time around.

Take it at Ivy Tech Bloomington during the fall or spring, get a ‘C’, then transfer the credit to IU. It should be really easy after taking it at IUB. My son dropped finite and IU and got a very easy ‘A’ in it at Ivy Tech Indianapolis. Ivy Tech Bloomington offers about ten sections of finite each fall and spring-- a huge number of sections for most any Ivy Tech class except basic ones like English Composition, so you know it has to be full of IU students. As a journalism major, no one will care about your ‘W’ in a math class. It should be really easy at Ivy Tech after taking it at IUB.

^ Does it cost money to take classes at Ivy Tech? The reason why the extended-x policy seems appealing is because it’ll override the low grade I get in Finite this semester and count my grade from next semester toward my GPA instead. If I just take it at Ivy Tech, I’ll still have that huge blemish on my GPA.

I thought you were getting “W” in finite, since you are not taking the final. The deadline for getting a W with your Dean’s approval was April 21.

If you get an F this semester, taking finite at Ivy Tech would not help your gpa at all, as it would not get rid of the F the way the extended-x would, but getting a C in finite at Ivy Tech next Fall would mean you don’t have to worry about meeting the requirement anymore. Ivy Tech is about $220 per credit for OOS students. So the Ivy Tech route would be best if you had a W in the course you are transferring from Ivy Tech to IUB.

You might consider taking the final and trying to get as high as you can rather than settle for the F, if that is what you are doing. The School of Journalism will count both the original grade and the extended-x grade in their calculations, but it likely will not make any difference in terms of meeting the 2.0 minimum gpa for the School of Journalism to graduate.

–The School of Journalism does not accept the Extended-X within degree requirements. It will not be calculated within the journalism degree. Both the original grade and the retaken grade will be calculated into degree requirements. –

An single F would probably not make a huge difference on your gpa after three or four years of school. And you still have to get at least a C- the next time you take finite at IU for it to count toward your Journalism requirements. If the C- gets rid of the F, then you would have 1.7 points instead of zero-- not an absolutely huge difference on your gpa for all the stress involved with retaking finite at IUB. Say you are borderline for the C- heading into the final next time you take it at IU, but do poorly on the final and get a D+ for the class. The D+ will still have a big impact on your gpa, and you will still need to satisfy the math requirement somehow, so you will be in almost the same position again in terms of gpa and S. of Journalism requirements. Unless you get really good at finite in the future, it is almost not worth doing the extended-x. A lot of people probably have a B heading into the final, bomb it, and wind up getting a D+ or worse. So many people get F’s instead of W’s in finite and calculus because they were depending on doing well on the final but bombed it instead. You see way more F’s in finite and calculus and the beginning econ classes because students had a decent grade going into the final but bombed it, or counted on the final to take them from a D to a C, but it took them to an F instead.

If you are still in the class, could you take the final and get a D or so as your final grade? That would at least give you something for your gpa if you decide to meet the math requirement at Ivy Tech.

Are you a direct admit to the School of Journalism? If you are, you don’t even have to take finite. You can take Math M-025 or some other non-college credit math course at IUB to meet the fundamental skills requirement to graduate. See page 7 of bulletin.

I’m not a DA to the school, but this semester I would have been able to finish up the requirements and gain admission had it not been for my math troubles. My GPA exceeds the minimum and I took all the classes I needed, now it’s just a matter of getting math out of the way.

I’m going to suck it up and take finite one more time at IU and do whatever I can to ensure that I fulfill the requirement.

My grade is high enough so that I can still pass with a D. I’ll make that my goal.
