I'm starting to look into internships and interviews for this upcoming summer. What kind of things should I be doing that would look good on a resume outside of job experience? I'm worried all I have is a GPA, some work experience from HS and summer jobs and thats really about it...

I'm a finance and management information systems major. Looking to do something in finance or maybe go to law school, not sure yet. Thanks.

Don’t do things just to get experience or get a resume booster. The people in those campus clubs will not like you, and your experience will not actually help you. A recruiter can see that you were a member of the undergraduate finance club, but when you get into an interview, they will ask you about your experience, and if all you can say is, “I went to meetings and saw a speaker or two,” that “experience” is worthless to the company.

If you find something you actually enjoy and can get into leadership, however, you could use that. I am on the executive board of a performing arts group at my campus, and that experience has, over three years, become an integral part of my resume. If you can’t find anything that looks like it will be enjoyable on campus, look elsewhere, but for the love of GOD do not do something just to put it on a resume.
