Extra Curriculurs

I’m from a pretty rural school and there aren’t many extracurriculars to do. I am worried this will affect my college app for higher level colleges. Any thoughts on what else I can add as I go into junior year? So far I am in STUCO leadership, NHS, Wellness club, a varsity swim team member, TADA/TATU, Interact Club and I am the only member of the tennis team. I volunteer with a local political party and work a job as well. My school doesn’t do any academic competitions (like Model UN), so how can I distinguish myself?

Not an expert on extra curricular here, but I find it kind of interesting that you are the only member of the tennis team…what is that experience like? Are you captain by default? Have you always been the only member? I think there could be a good essay about that!

It’s a bit of an odd story. My school has never had a tennis team, and as a 8th grader who had played for years I knew I wanted to compete. When I asked my AD to allow me to play for a neighbouring district, I was told the cost would be far too high to send me. In response I decided to begin my own team. I got about 20 signed up, got permission to use a local university’s courts, obtained equipment via donations from my own club’s members and found a coach. The AD then informed me there would be no team (or a club, which is what I was hoping for). Instead I compete by myself at tournaments with no coach. Luckily, many of the other schools allow me to practice with them, despite the fact I am nearly positive it is not allowed.

That sounds like a cool extra curricular story to me! Leadership, athletic ability, problem-solving…I think iris great that you found a way to continue to play your sport.
