hey dudes.
what shoooould an applicant do about extra recs?
i took a summer course at Brown this past summer and the professor offered to write me a rec. also, i have 2 alumni who offered to write recs, aaand my school principal said he would write one for me. how exactly do i do these; should i just have them send a letter saying nice things about me? should i send it in with the rest of my application or have them send it seperately?

sounds like you might be going a bit overboard.
extra recommendations don't carry a whole lot of weight unless they contain extraordinary insight
who was your professor over the summer? did they teach a full course or a mini-course? are they a full professor, assistant professor, etc? how well do they actually know you?
the one from your principal seems as though it would be the most valuable, the ones from alumni friends the least

dcircle has a good point. Keep in mind that there can be a fine line between impressing and annoying the admissions folks. You want to make sure you don't go overboard since it is probably not a good idea to annoy the person who is evaluating your application.

as long as they all tie in together towards some main quality that you are pushing through your application, then i say use them all. the most pleasing thing on an app is not the scores or numbers, but cohesion and presentation. if you were really good at one subject, and all recs mention your passion for it and your adeptness in such field, and they have the added bonus of being from alumni and brown profs and your principal, then go for it.

if they all say something generically good about you, then throw them all out.
