Can any current Harvard students comment on how much time their extracurricular activities take up, on average? I was looking at the list of student activities on Harvard's website recently and was very impressed. Roughly how much time does one activity require per week? I know the obvious answer is that it depends on the activity, but what about something like a club/intramural sport, or a student publication (think the Harvard Crimson, or the various student-produced literary magazines)? These are the two activities I would be most interested in pursuing in college -- not necessarily at Harvard, but I just want to get a feel for the time commitment involved.

Harvard students are usually adept at juggling the things they love, the things they like, and the things they must do. If you’re a half-way legitimate Harvard applicants, I suspect you’ve been successful too.

You answered your own question: it depends on the EC. Club sports may have 2-3 practices a week plus games and game travel. IMs are very user friendly. Once or twice a week to compete. Publishing? It could be a ton of time. Literary magazines run the gamut too. Some are frankly, not productive. Maybe one a year. Some churn out several issues.

I’ll PM you later. I can tell you a little bit about the Crimson/literary magazines and the club sport, but I’ll have to ask my friend some time about the intramural sports.

No, I’m perfectly aware of that, hence the reason why I wrote “not necessarily at Harvard” at the end of my post. The reason I specifically chose the Harvard forum to post this question under is because extracurricular life at Harvard is generally known to be very time-consuming, so I wanted to see how much time I’d end up spending on EC’s in the most time-consuming situation.
