Extracurricular activity:Will you call this "volunteer tutoring" or not?Confused

Hi!

I am a student living outside USA. I am currently doing my undergraduates in Bangladesh and I plan to transfer my credits to USA. . I am also a US permanent resident(green card holder) along with my mother.

I am currently facing a problem with the “extracurricular activities and work experience” section of the Common Applications (transfer). I love to teach and I have been teaching my friends for as long as I have known them. During my GCE O’level and A’level exams I used to spend hours teaching my friends (a minimum of 6hours every week). I even used to take their mock examninations and grade them. Even now that I am in college, I teach many of my classmates at my home. The time spent usually varies (1/2 hours every week). During finals week there were days where i have to teach for 10 hours straight. I hope I don't sound like I am bragging or even trying to make something look bigger than it actually is. It's just that I like teaching.

Now, the thing is I really wanted to include my teaching experience in the common application. Since I am not making any monetary gain out of this experience I cannot just write “private tutor”. I am trying to think of an appropriate term to describe this activity. So far I came up with “volunteer tutoring to high school/college level students”. However, I feel the term “volunteer” seems like a bit of exaggeration since at the end of the day I was just teaching my friends and not doing any real community work. I don’t want to completely avoid mentioning this teaching experience either since it is very important to me.

So, basically can anyone help me figure out an appropriate term for this activity? Your help will be really appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Well, you technically DID volunteer- you didn’t have to help your friends. I think ;volunteer tutor’ makes perfect sense to what you’re doing.

Thank you, milkyway531. I am glad it makes perfect sense to you. I feel less worried about it right now.

I agree, it was really nice of you to help all of those people and you should definitely mention it. “Volunteer tutoring” is a perfect term for what you did : )

Thanks a lot,deckthehalls. I really appreciate it.

I think that is perfect as well. Maybe you could explain your love of teaching, if you could work it into you short answer/ essay, if it’s something that goes along with your intended major. (or even not) Do not discount your efforts, just because you enjoyed helping friends. The fact that you enjoyed it so much, points to a “passion” and will hopefully help you choose a career path. good luck!

Thank you for you kind words,marybee333! It really means a lot to me.
