Hey everyone, I'll be attending WashU (Olin Business) in the fall and I want to have a good balance between academics and extracurricular activities. I really want to be involved on campus, so what's a good amount of clubs/organizations to join while still having time for academics? I'm planning on double majoring in Finance and Journalism, and I'd like to join a couple business organizations and a couple journalism organizations, along with some community service. I don't want to commit to so many organizations and then realize that I don't have time for them all, so any help will be appreciated!

I know this is going to sound really obvious, but it really depends on how much of a time commitment each of the organizations are. If it’s a once per week thing, then 4 is not completely unreasonable (although it is still a fair bit. Might want to sign up for a couple first semester - if you find you still have time, then you can always join more later).

You can probably juggle a few extracurriculars while still managing your freshman course load. There’s always a career fair a few weeks after the start of the fall semester, so you can walk the quad and take a look at every extracurricular group on campus. Putting your name on the list is no commitment whatsoever, so you can attend a few meetings for each group and see what appeals to you the most.

You do know that there is no journalism major, right?

(On that note, if you’re interested in journalism, you should look at StudLife and, in particular, the Newspaper pre-o “Freshman Press”)

First of all, thanks for the replies. Secondly, I’m aware that WashU doesn’t offer a Journalism major, but next year they will offer a B.S. in Journalism.

I’m considering going to Freshman Press, can anybody tell me about their pre-orientation experiences?

You’ve probably done plenty of research and know more about that journalism degree than I do, but are you aware of the fact that it’s through the U-College? If you haven’t already, you should contact the appropriate people to make sure you can complete this program as a full-time undergraduate at Wash U.

Well huh. The more you know.
But yeah, as RaVNzCRoFT said, you may not be able to double major in UCollege. I’d double check on that if I were you.

As for Pre-O’s, I did the Habitat one way back when. I know people who’ve been very involved in Freshmen Press, and it’s something that’s very beneficial if you want to hit the ground running, so to speak, with the campus newspaper. If you find StudLife isn’t for you, there are a bunch of other journalism-type groups as well (ie WUPR, WUnderground).

Edit: to clarify, the journalism UCollege major is not really new. It just currently exists as a joint communications/journalism major and will be split in 2 starting in July. I know lots of people that have taken UCollege journalism classes, but they have expressly stated that they were not permitted to double major through UCollege.

And for further clarification (Sure is a lot of clarifying going on right now, hahaha), UCollege is a continuing education division the Arts and Sciences school at washu, but it is fairly separate from the regular wustl undergraduate schools. Wustl limits the number of courses one can take through UCollege for credit, and, like Johnson181 said, I don’t believe that there is any precedent whatsoever for being allowed to major through UCollege.

I did the physics pre-o program. My advice would be to do a more “fun” pre-o program, rather than a more serious academic one. There’s plenty of time for seriousness in the following 4 years.

Yeah, I wanted to do LAUNCH or something related to community service, but my physical activity will be limited due to a surgery I will get over the summer.
As for the Journalism major, I emailed the University College about this, and I’ll let you guys know what they tell me. I have done research, but I couldn’t find anything about whether you could double major through the UCollege, so I’m guessing that you guys are right. Thanks a lot!
