Journalism/Communications

Does Wash U have a good program for journalism, or just good programs for english and writing?

Great for English and writing, but I think if you want to take journalism classes you have to do it through UCollege, which is separate from Arts and Sciences and is kind of like a night school.

I know that they don't have a major in journalism, but that's it.

The previous two posts are very much correct; WashU is excellent for English lit and English composition, and there is no formal journalism/communications major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Typically what most prospective journalists will do at WashU is to major in some related field (ELit & EComp, philosophy, some cultural studies major) and even minor in something else if they want to specialize in a certain kind of journalism. These students will often also write for Student Life, WashU's thrice-weekly independent student newspaper, and then go to journalism school after they graduate.

Hope this helps.

So then would you say Wash U is a good choice if I know I do not want to be a journalist but I like reporting and writing a lot?

Yes; in fact I am a member of the Student Life staff. I don't think I want to be a journalist, but writing for Student Life has definitely helped me develop news writing as a sort of hobby. If you have any questions about Student Life, I can answer a good deal of them. If there's any questions I can't answer, I can tell you who to contact (I can PM you or something).

I know I am going back to an old thread, but I would like more detailed information on journalism opportunities at WUSTL. Can someone majoring in an A&S department take courses in the "night school" university division of WUSTL and have it apply to the degree as electives? Is there a radio or TV station at the school where students can get experience. what about internships at radio stations or TV stations in St. Louis? Anyone have any experience doing any of these activities?

The undergraduate colleges here do not have any journalism program. However, the night school does have a journalism/communications major, which fields courses taught by former journalists and journalism professors. There's also the Student Life newspaper (of which I'm a member), the KWUR radio station 90.3 FM, and the student television station, WUTV. I don't know much about internships in journalism in St. Louis, though I do know it might be possible to do something with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

If you're serious about interning at one of the St. Louis TV or radio stations, you may want to check with them sooner rather than later. One problem you may face is that a LOT of broadcast journalism majors from Mizzou (University of Missouri-Columbia) want to work at the St. Louis stations, and Mizzou has one of the best broadcast journalism programs in the country. Perhaps it'll be easier to get an internship during the school year, though, since Mizzou is a couple of hours west of St. Louis.
